  • New Us Production VS Model 4? HELP !!

Pickup configuration aside how does the new US Production model compare to an 87-88 model 4? Neck shape and feel etc.

Im in a quandry.. I REALLY want one of these Black one with dual buckers. (san dimas 1??) At least I think I do .. Since I havent played one.. Anyhow, things at my night job have been dead , so money is non existant for me..
The problems are this... To get one, Im gonna have to sell..
I dont want to part with any of my current herd. (except maybe the shecter)
So Im asking myself these questions..
    1) How does it play and feel? (Sadly, I cant try one)
    2) What makes it different?? I have a bunch of black guitars, I have several with trems, including 2 model 4s and a Kramer pacer imperial with an orig floyd and a Duncan jazz/jb set.. So Why do I NEED this??

I will most likely have to part with one of my 4s. Is it worth it?? Should I sell the 87 or 88? What should I be able to get for the 4? One is nearly mint, the other has some minor buckle rash and some minor nicks. 8 out of 10 at least..

Silly as it may seem, Im losing sleep over this... help if you can. thanks

I'm also curious... My maple neck Model 4 needs a friend!!! Anybody can compare the neck of the new batch with the one on a Model 4?

i dont have a model 4, but I had a 650XL, and to me, they didnt feel the same, the new ones are more "traditional feeling"

The necks are MUCH thicker on the new Models than the old model series. Mines like .805 at the 1st to .835 at the 12th. Way too thick and uniform for me, its getting shaved down this weekend before I send it out for paint. If youre used to an old Model series guitar, I dont think youll like the neck on the new ones much.

          RobRR,
Thanks! I guess I should cool my jets about wanting one then .. I find the neck on the Model guitars almost too thick..haha..
But the Charvels look soo Kewl! I should get a Jackson DK2m.. Cheaper and thinner neck..
How does the neck on the Charvel feel tho?? isnt the raw neck supposed to be satiny?

          Thanks

I here the dk2m are not so thin neck wise. Look for the jackson with the .775 to .810 necks. If you have the cash get a charvel standard pointy.
If you want a strathead build yourself one. I just ordered a strathead from mojobodies with the thin D profile like my san dimas pointy to go on a quilted mighty mite body.

The profile on the DK2M is a little fuller and not much like a thinner, shred-style neck. I have a DK2M, a Music Zoo Charvel Natural Series and an '89 Jackson Strat 24 (USA made) and the DK2M has the meatiest neck of the three.

If you live near a GC, you should be able to find a DK2M to audition in person. If that's not an option, just be aware that it is a fuller profile though certainly not clubby or like a baseball bat (remember the original Fender Jeff Beck model?), in my opinion.

Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.
