  • Replacement neck?

Thanks for any help you guys can give me. I have a 'custom shop' San Dimas's from 4 or 5 years ago. It got the 1D plate and is like # 6050 or something around there. It was one of the first runs that Wild West Guitars did in special colors. I shipped it to myself instead of packing it when I moved and the neck was damaged. LSS, I need a new neck and I'm not a big fan of Musikraft (the seem fine, but I just like Charvel better).

I've contacted Charvel and tried to work out a deal where they would replace one for me. I even offered to send the damaged neck back. They're still like 'seriously, tough luck, sucker...no dice'.

    Here's what I help with....

Will a USA production neck fit the body and work okay? I was thinking about buying one of them and jacking the neck off it for a replacment and selling the rest. I'm definately not buying one until I know for sure. No offense, but I feel a little violated here by this 'no neck policy' and I'm not chasing good money after bad if it won't work. I'd really like to get the thing up and running again, instead of collecting dust.

If the USA production neck won't fit, does anyone know what the 'custom shop' loaded body is worth?

If the butt width of the original neck on your custom is 2 & 1/4 (almost all are, unless it was special ordered differently), it should work.

Is it a pointy? is so the older ones come up for sale for a few hundred on ebay all the time. Mojobodies ( one of our sponsors) makes some really good strat necks to charvel specs. I just got one and I love it!

I had a PC-1 with a damaged neck (unrepairable) and wanted to send the guitar in to have a new neck attached. They said it's not possible. Matt (Matt's Music) tried everything to make it happen, but they did not do it. Since they did not want my money, I went to a local luthier who made a new one.

Man, that is one crappy policy. It makes me not want a bolt-on Jackson or Charvel anymore. It's plain stupid. Even offering to return the original to the factory should be honored and replaced. I believe Fender will do this no problem, as that was Leo's main reason for offering a bolt on in case of neck breakage.

those are musikraft necks just ordered to Mojobodies specs just like i do for my Clone brand guitars. the best way for parts guitar guys to get around the strathead license....have a licensed shop build the necks to your specs.

I guess its not a pointy then. If it was, I would just throw a model series neck on it. Straight from the Japanese custom shop, circa 1987. Right now theres a production model in the classifieds that can be had for under $600 using the live.com cashback thing. Pretty nice deal. Steal the neck, maybe get $400 for the other parts, youre all good to go. Or play the thing, say, Hey this is nicer than my cs guitar, and sell the other parts off for more.

That's my disposition at this point. I spend thousands of bucks on a useless guitar. Granted, it's not Charvel's fault it's wrecked, but I wouldn't buy a car from a manufacturer that doesn't make replacement parts. By the way, it's got a jackson headstock...my opinion is that stratheads belong on Fenders, not Charvels.

Bengal65's right. That's one of the reasons I buy bolt-ons. You could just replace the neck...done. If they want to make-like 'necks are unobtainable' then I have to consider bolt-ons by the same criteria that I consider set necks. Well fine then, in that case, I'm probably going to chose a Paul Reed Smith every time. Maybe even Gibson (no-shit!)....maybe even a Robot!

When it's all said and done, I like the guitar and it's really a shame it's going to end up going for parts. As much as I get a kick out of Charvel guitars, I'm not sure if it makes much sense to spend the cash on one in the future.

                Thanks for the help.

If it's a pointy (a.k.a Jackson) headstock then you should be able to find a used one. Ask around here and keep an eye on eBay as they come up often. Another option is check out getting the neck repaired. Depending on where you are, someone should be able to point you to a good luthier that can likely fix it for less than parting out a production series.
