  • Discontinued SD with NOS Brass Tremolo

    Looking into buying this guitar:

According to the guitar shop, it´s a discontinued US made San Dimas with the pointy head and the last ones that were produced in snow white.

The PU-config is good for me, but I was wondering if you could help with with input on the guitar itself (is it true it´s discontinued? what year appr? pros/cons?) and the NOS brass trem (can I lower it to get an ultra low action? given I do not use the trem arm, will the NOS brass trem give me any troubles with tuning/sustain over a regular fixed trem or string-through construction?)

    Big thx for any input!

That's one of the production Charvels that were discontinued in (I think) late 2006. If you don't use the trem, you should be fine in terms of tuning stability, and you can lower the action by lowering the saddles.

    Nice looking guitar....

I have a SD strathead with the vintage brass trem, my action is super ultra low(the only way I like it)and the tone and sustain are great! If you don't put the bar on you will think it's a hardtail, totally maint. free.I would like a 2nd with a floyd, but these brass trems are really nice.Nice looking Charvel by the way.

Great guitars, mine has very low action and stays in tune. Adding more springs will make it even more stable too.

              I like it!

And being a 2006, you should get a nice deal on that - they just aren't gettin' the love (I scored big time on my new(er) SD pointy - see avatar)...

Thx for all the good replies. Yes, I would make a pretty good deal on it, - less than half the list price although US guitars in general are quite expensive in Sweden where I live. It´s brand new.

One of the major Swedish GC store chains bought a handful of these, - all in snow white and with the NOS brass trem, over a year ago and apparently they have had problems in matching their supply with the demand as the guitars all look the same and most are looking for OFRs/strat heads on these anyway.

Also, some of those already sold a year ago, are coming out on the market used now, which further presses prices down. Here is an example:

Sveriges största cirkulära marknad. Köp & sälj begagnat & second hand, enkelt & hållbart. Mode, Inredning, Elektronik, Motor, Samlarobjekt & mer | Tradera.

Any feeling for how they are in terms of quality? Great, good, poor vs. other Charvel models?

I understand the bridge humbucker is a SD TD-14, but what about the neck single-coil pu?

You could also tighten up the spring claw inside. That, in addition would make the the v-trem as good as a hardtail bridge. That's the way I like those trems too. I hardly ever put the trem arms in my 2 Strats. (and that's just when I take pictures of them!)

                  PS: I love that guitar!

Looks like a decent deal for Sweden - call it about US$850? If there's a case included, I would say that's a good deal knowing that it's a very expensive country to live in!

Quality on mine is really good, I happen to like it a lot, although the neck has a much thicker profile than I had expected. The downside is the maple fretboard gets dirty too quickly (but it's an unfinished neck, so what did I expect???), and the clear on the headstock has a nasty habit of lifting on these models (mine is ok...for now!).

No idea on the neck pickup, to be honest, the only pickup configurations I have ever seen on this model have been single and double Seymour Duncan humbuckers - I like the single in the neck though, I would guess it is also a SD...

I would rather own one of these than the new strathead Charvels that have come out of late, and the fact you can buy them at a cheaper price seals the deal for me!

My SD has a "cool rail" in the neck. H-S config.

I own a 2005 Pointy and it is a solid guitar and a great deal for the going price range. Brass trems are ok, but not great for dive bombs. You can get the action low regardless and shouldn't have problems. The 2005's with neck single coils came with Duncan Classic Stacks from the factory--so I would guess that's what you are looking at.
