  • new floyds and action on production models

So has anyone been able to get the Floyd on their new production models to sit flush on the body of the new production models? My 2005 San Dimas Standard I can get the floyd to set flush without any fret buzz, but I'm having a heck of time trying to do the same set up on the newer production model SD1's. Is this due to the difference on the pitch of the headstock from a pointy to the strat head?

I couldn't do it on my '05 Charvel Star without fretting out; it was about 1/4" or so floating above the body. I just put shims under the saddles and was able to then drop it to the body that way.

Would putting shims under the locking nut help as well?

I think the problem is the neck pocket is routed on an angle or there are shims under the neck. If you look at the side of the neck and compare the fret markers, you can clearly see the neck is angled. For a flush mount, the neck shouldn't be angled.

Draw it out on a piece of paper and you'll see what I mean.

I do know there are no shims under the neck, I checked when I first received it and adjusted the truss rod.

These were designed for the floyd to float, but just a little shim & you'll be all set.

That'll just make your action higher at the nut. Either shim the saddles or the neck. I didn't want to mess with the neck on mine, so just a few metal shims worked fine for me under the saddles.

I'll give it a try. What kind of material did you use for the saddle shims?

Metal shims made for Floyd saddles.

                    Nice!
Did you use just one .2mm shim per saddle or did you have to use more than one on each to get the desired height?

I used a couple on each to get the radius and height right. It was a pain in the ass, eventually I got it right, but I don't remember exactly how many I used. I traded the guitar away a few months ago.

                            Hey-

You might want to leave the action alone and block the trem from the back. Take a piece of wood and glue it in between the trem block and the body. The trem block hits the wood/body and stays in the "float" position as if it were hitting the top.

I actually was trying to avoid doing that. My initial idea was to install a D-Tuna, but I think I am going to install it on my 2005 San Dimas Standard instead.

                              Thanks for the input though.
