The Schaller/JT-590 baseplate is quite a bit thicker than an OFR baseplate, so it might be thick enough for helicoils. It's not steel like an OFR, so I don't know if it can be welded.

I need to stumble onto a project like that. I'd say if it isn't going in a museum, put a Schaller/OFR on it.

Ok so after stripping the paint and filling dents with Bondo the quest has begun. I'm not sure what kind of paint Charvel used but it resisted the 3 different types of stripper I had , so it took a lot of sanding to get the old finish off. Next step is to order the catalyzed urethane sealer to seal the wood back up. I'm thinking of a snow white color for this guitar since that was one of the original finish options, but thats subject to change.

Yeah and also the body blank was 3 pieces of wood joined with a contoured top plate. The fixed neck wasnt the third plank in the middle either, its a different kind of fixed neck joint.

The 750's are set neck, not neck thru.

                Very cool project.
I just finished up a Model 5A restoration project not too long ago. These older Charvel's are fun to bring back to life.

Yup! I finished my Model 6 restoration a month or two back. This reminds me to update the thread I made when I got it!

I'd advise the original guy to shoot for pearl white, perhaps. I did gloss white on my Model 6 and it looks a bit bland.

But, cool pics nevertheless. And as bombtek says, that definitely isn't a mahog/maple mix.

I know how much you just love stripping paint off guitars.

Wow, how come I can't stumble across a find like this? All my local pawn shop has is a buttload of Squiers..

Nice job so far, can't wait to see the outcome. I'd really like to get a project guitar together myself someday.

wouldn't it be a good idea to ask Mr Learn to do the logo and the paintjob in mind?

Yeah I should but I ran into financial issues with the damn holidays, so rather than get divorced I've put painting it on hold till after the first of the year. Tax refund baby! Just don't tell the wife.

Great thread, Always love seeing these restored. I have one that I need to get started on. Been sitting on it for well over a year. It'll be getting the same treatment as yours...except with all new parts. I only bought the guitar itself, no hardware.
