My Charvel tiger strip refinishing project.

Thanks. It had its challenges, but I did enjoy the project. I just couldnt justify or afford $2K for a new one. even $1500 for a used Soloist. So I said hey, here is an opportunity for my project that I have always wanted to do. the hardest part was doing the masking and making the design. you can drive yourself silly doing that by 2nd guessing yourself on the design. I mean I wanted it to look cool and I didnt want it to look like a el cheapo version. again.......you can drive yourself silly with it. eventually you have to stop and just let it happen and paint it.

I just got done playing it. its a nice guitar. I am still kinda of dialing it in so to speak, with the pickup hieght, and neck relief/bridge height. I got it where I am really liking it now. I kinda got a soft spot in my heart for those toothpaste logo Charvels. I have another one, a 475. and I really like my USA soloists, but for some reason, those Toothpaste charvels just call to me. I like the necks on them, and I really like the Schaller Floyds on them. really nice. they are quality. the jackson pickups are pretty good, not bad at all, but I just like a Duncan JB. so its a nice package. Maybe sometime in the future I will Be able to find another one on ebay.

It wasnt really "bad". just challenging at times. tedious. certainly acheivable though, without a doubt. just not a cakewalk. you need to have patience, and I dont. so it was a bit of work for me in that repspect.

Looks great! I agree, it's weird...the "before" pics are obviously a rosewood fretboard, but the refin pics look like ebony! Awesome job! How long did this take you?

I am thinkign it took about 6 hours with assembly and disassembly included. thats counting my time and my co worker too. he helped me and he actually sprayed it and did the final buffing. we sprayed the yellow, then masked, then sprayed black. then we had to do it over again as it didnt work the first time with vinyl masking. we sanded, re sprayed yellow. I wrapped it like a mummy in masking tape, then cut out the design and we sprayed again, then did 6 coats of clear. buffed the next day, then let it dry a few days. and then I assembled it. keep in mind, thats painting it twice cuz the first time didnt work. that was my error as I tried to use vinyl from a graphics place. I just had some "low tack" stuff that was old and sat on the shelf a long time. it didnt work that well. oh well, you live and learn. I know how how to do it next time.
