  • DKMG EMG 81/85 backwards??

I have a trans black DKMG with the EMG 81/85 set. I always thought it sounded a bit "off" on the neck pup, clean on the amp. Not horrible, just off the mark for some reason. I noticed the other day that the pups are 85 (gold) in the bridge and 81 (silver) in the neck. This is backwards from what the set normally is set up as. And also backwards from the description from Jackson. Now I see this ad http://cgi.ebay.com/Jackson-DKMG-EMG...item2a01bcfa80 which the factory pic shows how mine is, and shows the Jackson description so mine's obviously not the only one. Anyone know what the story on this is?

BTW - this is a rarity, most every one I've seen has them 81 bridge, and 85 neck except mine and the ebay factory pic..

Some people (me included) prefer the 85 in the bridge, so just swap 'em around. What works for some folks don't work for others...

Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I also prefer the 85 in the bridge with the 81 in the neck. They've got the quick-connect clip, so you can easily change them and see what sounds best to you.

My warlock has an 85 in the bridge, as with this DKMG and I like it too. I am gonna swap them. I thought it may just have been the guy I got it from swapped them but he got it new and knew nothing about guitars. So I was thinking it may be a factory oops.. Now I see that pic on ebay and was wondering if there was a reason some of these had them backwards.

Another fan of 85 in the bridge checking in. Should I get my hands on a guitar with the usual bridge/neck 81/85 setup, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Yup me too, played 81b/85n a while but couldn't stand the thin sound (in a mahogany guitar for that matter)

slacked strings, 15 minutes later I was playing 81n/85b and still am

Holy shit! Put that thing up on ebay right away! Due to its rarity, you should be able to get a couple grand for it! Maybe you could get Mustaine to sign it and make it even more valuable! I wouldn't be surprised if some douche actually realized they were reversed and tried this!

Seriously, I like the 85 in the bridge as well, but I prefer a 60 in the neck position more than anything.

^^ Lol.. That's funny! And it's a few years old so it's close enough to VINTAGE for ebayers!! By rare, I meant a rare fuck up. It seems that the japanese moron who swapped these at the factory didn't get a hold of too many to assemble wrong.
That's actually what I'm probably going to swap in. I've heard good things about a 60 or IIRC, an 89 in the neck. Opinions? I am keeping the 85 in the bridge..

I also prefer the 60 in the neck, but the 81 works well.

Read up a bit and the 89 is basically an 85 with the ability to split the coils. How would you describe a 60 compared to a 85 in the neck?

The 60 is brighter. I actually prefer brighter pups in the neck.

I've also swapped mine on my dk1's. Sounds much better!
