  • Upgrading Jackson DK2M

I have my sights set on a DK2M at a local guitar shop, priced at £370.
I was wondering if it would be worth upgrading it? Here is what I want to do to it:
    Gold hardware
    (controls,floyd,nut,tuners,strapbuttons,pickup rings.)
    Original Floyd Rose (gold)
Seymour Duncan Pickups (invader bridge, fullshred neck)

I can't afford my dream custom at the moment, but this guitar has all my dream specs, and I know the Japanese Jackson quality is great. Is it worth it?
Also how much would all this set me back? etc. Thanks.

Hardware color isn't an upgrade, but if that's what makes you like the guitar more, go for it.

          Only in the UK, though!

          Sorry, just noticing everyone's location.

Yeah, I have to agree, I do not care for the Invader. In theory, it's beefy and mean and sounds like Godzilla stomping all over Tokyo... In practice, it sounds like Godzilla farting.

When did people start using Invaders again? I swear, in the 90's, no one touched those things.

I never thought the Invader was muddy. I had a pair of them in my old Kelly XLR and thought they were great.
Apparently James Hetfield liked it enough for Master of Puppets, and it's not muddy on there.

I tried one in the 80's and that's the last time I touched one!

Damn, at that price it better be new with case. That's top dollar.

I upgraded a new Pavo Purple DK2 with gold hardware. I just got a JT580LP in gold. The gold knobs have abolone inset in them. It looks very sweet. I love the look of gold and purple, and would love to have a purple Marshall with gold trim.

My pickups are still the stock Duncan Designed.

If you are going to get into the electronics, I recommend getting a push/pull pot to split the humbucker. I have a full shred in a 750XL, and it sounds VERY stratty (to me) split.

The Invader I haven't had for 20 years, but I'd like to try one again. Duncan Distortions are a popular upgrade for DK2's.

I'd say it was worth it. You'll end up spending nearly the same total as you would for a neckthrough 1990s Pro or used USA model, BUT you won't find a used USA DK-1 with maple fretboard and black fins and binding for that price, since that would be the equivalent. Sure you can find a Rhoads or Kelly or Soloist, but it'll have an ebony board, and will not be the same.

What's up with all the UK love for BK pickups? Is that like a law over there?

a '90s guitar probably has some parts that are worn out
And in most cases you end up changing the p'ups unless by chance you like what it came with
so any used higher-end will probably be having things added to the price anyway
