Finally I get to post this: I have finally found an '86 Model 4 in amazing condition! I don't think there is even any paint off of the Kahler! Been looking for a good one for a long time (hard to get here in Canada) and the search is over. A couple of the pots make a little noise but I think the guitar's been under somebody's bed for the last 18 years. Should I use a little WD-40 or just swap the pots out? It looks pink in the pic's but it's pretty much a "Chinese Red"

Use some electronics cleaner on the pots
Don't forget the corn. It's nutritious, delicious, and ribbed for her pleasure.

Will WD-40 do the trick or should I grad something at Radio Shack tomorrow?

Do not use WD-40. Some pots are attached to active electronics.

I bought an LP from Hawaii. It had sticky pots and a crackly jack. All it needed was some use. By playing it, using the pots, plugging in and taking out the jack, it returned to great shape.

When things sit and don't get used, they oxidize. Rust prevents making a good contact.

If you must, get the contact cleaner from Radio Shack.

You want to order something like this product...

801B electrical contact cleaner spray cleans, lubricates and protects contacts. It contains a slow drying, plastics-safe solvent that removes stubborn residues. The PPE enhances conductivity and provides long term protection from oxidation. It also bonds to the surface of metals and is particularly effective on gold, protecting gold contacts for life.

Note that it specifies it is for use with potentiometers. Some contact cleaners that don't lubricate can 'freeze up' a potentiometer and make it difficult to turn.

You want to avoid something like WD-40 or 3-in-1 style oils because they have solvents in them that will break down the carbon resistance elements in the pots.

The contact spray worked better than I'd hoped. Just got it back from the shop (setup) and it's freaking awesome!
