There's a scene in Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow where They train an octopus to attack a girl on a beach so that the hero will be forced to rescue her and fall in love with her. I thought maybe it was influenced by that (Excellent book, btw - especially recommended to conspiracy theorists).
