Try getting something with a maple fretboard. My Dk2m has a very good strat tone. You can still tell it is a dinky but it plays great .

The strat tone I get in two of my guitars sounds great when switching from a heavily distorted bridge pup to the neck pup without making any other changes to my effects/amp. Neither guitar produces a very good strat tone through a clean channel and I wouldn't expect them to. If I wanted to get a great strat tone through a totally clean amp with my DK2 I think it would just be a matter of finding the right pup for the job. I plan on trying out a Duncan APS-1 at some point.
