  • Jackson Dinky, Soloist or Charvel SD S1 2h?

I GAS-ing one of the above mentioned axes and need feedback on neck thicknesses. I've read a few threads about neck thicknesses on Dinkys but I don't know the specs on these guitars well enough to make an informed decision and I can't get my mits on them to see if I bond. I'm leaning more towards 24 frets on a smaller neck and a recessed Floyd. Reverse headstock gets extra points. I'm including the SD S1 2h because it's similar to my Star Std. it's just about exactly what I'm looking for in neck thickness and feel.

Maybe I should rephrase my question: If you had to choose between a Soloist and a Dinky, (assuming they're both gonna be USA made and offer same equipment) which would you go for? How does the neck feel? The specs on the website don't really tell me anything worthwhile.

I'd go soloist. I have a DK1 neck. It's thin. It's oiled. But I just like my SL2H better. The paint doesn't bother my. The slightly fatter doesn't bother me.

It's really kind of stupid to ask someone else. You might not like what I like. Find out for yourself which one you like better. It's going to be your guitar, you will have to live with it.

Well I'd go with the DK1. I had an SL2H and DK1, sold the SL2H. Both are great guitars but the DK1 neck for me plays like butter and the overall tone of the DK1 was better to my ear. I also thought the DK1 was more comfortable to play. As for the new USA made Charvels - they are great and probably the best value out there today. You'd save considerable coin going that direction but the quality won't be comparable to a USA Jackson. If you want top of the line get the DK1.

+1 to what DonP says. It's crazy how some people don't like the exact same thing I like sometimes, even though I KNOW it's the best!

But if you really want my opinion... For the same money (and they are) I GREATLY prefer the Soloist. I like that the neck is a little thicker, and once you play on it for a bit and get a little oil on the paint it slips and slides just fine.

Not stupid at all. I figure the feedback I get on here, while subjective and opinionated, is valid and worthwhile when I can glean bits of useful info that aren't listed in the specs or promo material available on J & C's websites. Case in point: earlier year models sported different specs. If I went with a used ax, someone on here could conceivably provide useful feedback on that year's model.

Well If you like a thinner neck then I would suggest you try to find a 90s USA soloist or Pro soloists. Im not 100% sure about the 90s USA soloists necks being thin but on my 93' soloist pro its thinner than my 2005 USA soloist. Its also thinner than my Charvel so-cal. So your best bet(if you want a thin neck and the great upper-fret access) is to find a 90s Soloist.

See? Now we're getting somewhere. I'm kinda partial to the feel and dimensions of the unpainted necks on Charvels. I'm reasonably sure unless you order or find a custom shop Soloist/ Dinky, you're not gonna get unpainted necks though. Anyone ever hear of unpainted necks on Soloists or Dinky's?

The DK1 neck is finished with Tru Oil. There are a few Soloists around with unpainted necks, but it's a custom thing.

A Dinky is a bolt-on. Bolt-on models have unpainted necks. The only Jackson bolt-ons I can think of that have painted necks are the Chrisitian Olde-Wolbers signature 6- and 7-string models and the old JJP Les Paul shape.

I'm not sure that imports were out of the question toejam but if they're not aren't most of the imports still satin poly?

Yes, the bolt-on imports have a satin finish on their necks.
