The J-95 came in the model 88 Charvels and model 5's only and is a broad banded pick up and works great in mahogony bodied guitars. Its a fat sounding pick up but not what I would call a mushy pick up at all I can get some sting out of my 88.
The J-85 DR is a killer pick up in alder or poplar tons of mid range IMO.
The J-50's are A5 magnets.
Straight J-90 is an A5 too and quite rare I've only seen one in the last 15 years. J-90C is ceramic as we all know.Really? well screw Mark Twain.

this catalogue scan has descriptions of many of Jackson's pickups, circa early-90s: http://audiozone.dk/guitargallery/in...1992Page26.jpg
and I'm with straycat - I like the J85 in my Fusion SS. I'm not sure if it has J100s or J110s in it but they are my favourite Jackson singles too. I want to say they are J110s, because they sound better than the pickups in my M1AHail yesterday

My 1A was a little flubby sounding so I installed an RS kit and the J-100's really responded well to better pots and caps.
The kit opened up the pickups and they had better over all tone.A little cripsper and more bell like.
I always remove the tone from the middle pick up and wire the tone to the bridge pick up so I can control the bite on the bridge.
J-100's are really nice pick ups IMO.Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Well anyway back to the subject at hand, I put a "J-95" marked "5A" in the bridge of my Jackson, and with a little hight adjustment im well pleased so far. Seems to have a nice balance overall with a little more clartiy in the midrange with a little more twang. Im still looking for the "J-90" thats in my collection somewhere. Thanks for all your input.

Just to carry on with the theme.

Wish someone made a box that you put a magnet in and it tells you if it's an A2, 3, 4, 5 or 8 or ceramic and what grade.
I had (I guess wrongly) assumed that they simply came out of Model 3 or Model 5 guitars. Now I am beginning to understand there is more to the Jackson pickup range than just the letter codings and there are infact different shades of grey.
Newc, you appear to be the knowledge center on tech bits, perhaps JCF should give you your own section, "Ask Newc" or summut like that.

Yep.. There are N & B models.Of the 50. I also assume neck & bridge. For others like the 80 or 90 C indicates ceramic magnet & no letter is alnico.
The 5A sticker means it came out of a model 5a.. or should have. Jackson used to have a chart with the pickup descriptions but its been over a decade since i've seen it
