the reason for the tape on the back was for when he would walk out on stage in the dark, he would turn his guitar to the back side so people could not see him entering the stage for the first song and encore.

This is what I have also read. Sharon had him put the tape on it, hold the guitar backwards, cover the neck with his arm, then he would flip it over when the song would start.

I just never really got the whole "relic" craze. If I want an old beat up guitar, I'll buy it used or beat it up myself (adds mojo) and save a pant load... Just sayin'.
