• Kelly's

As I'm looking to buy a Kelly(neck-thru), and because I've seen this thread about how a Rhoads feels when playing sitting down, I want to ask a few questions about the Kelly model in general.

1. How to these baby's balance? I've heard that they are neckheavy. Is this true?

2. How do they feel playing when sitting down? I'm thinking I'll just put the round place between the two lower "horns" on my leg and I'll be good to go.

3. Do they really have "speed necks" or is this a misprint on the Jackson site?

Thanx a million

-Balance: Depends on who you ask but I had a bolt-on Kelly that was neck heavy. Charvel750 insists the neckthroughs are not neck heavy.
My set-neck Gibson Explorer is neck heavy, but I put the rear strap pin near the top of the rear bout and it's much better.

-Sitting down: I have to ask; How hard is it to play standing up? I can understand if you have back trouble, but goodness sakes, stand up and shout!

Given the Kelly's scalloped bottom edge (Strat-style), it should rest comfortably on either leg.

Yes, Kellies balance very nicely sitting. Standing was not a problem either, and the guitar wasn't neck-heavy, didn't do any neck dives (mine was a bolt-on, XLR model, I traded it a few months back), but I had to keep the strap over the top of the body to pull it back closer to my stomach, as it seemed to tilt out away from me and towards the floor a little. I saw a picture of someone from Lynyrd Skynyrd do the same thing with his strap on his Explorer. I also had a Kelly Standard in the early '90s (I think it was a standard... bolt-on, white plastic dot inlays), and that seemed to balance and feel about the same.

I have a ke3r bolt on and she sits fine on me if I stood up and started clapping my bloody hands she'd [the neck] go down a bit , not that I would ever do that live though -" LA we are here to rock you !!! " and if you did that you'd deserve to break you neck anyway -- also it depends on the type of wood it's made of for instance basswood and some times alder on any weird shape guitar will make it dive as maple is gonna be the heavyer wood where as if you have mahogany sides mixed with the maple she's not gonna dive //Steve

Re: Kelly\'s

Blondie - Atomic. She's got (or had) THE solo singer's voice. All this "ooh ahh baby woowoo" crap that people try to pass off today (Mariah Carey, etc) is lame and sounds very contrived. Debbie Harry had a great voice - powerful, emotional, and clear.

And yes, that's Bark At The Moon by Ozzy with Jake E Lee on guitar.

The two songs I wish theyda left out are Rein in Blood and Workin For the Weekend - Loverboy is too weak against the others, and Slayer...well, face it, the riffing's great but the vocals bite ass

But back to the original topic - I should have mentioned earlier that the one problem I had with the Kelly (well, besides that nosediving business ) was the location of the bridge - it's right in front of your zipper, unless you wear it on your hip, but then your fretting hand is reaching too far over IMO. Moving the rear strap pin to the top of the horn is a BIG help with that, though, as it makes the body hang further back, putting the bridge in a position similar to a Strat-style.

My KE3 was a little neck heavy till I swapped the neck for the reverse head/bound DXMG neck.....which I thought was strange since the necks aren't any heavier than the others.

As for VROCK, When Peace sells comes on I usually just drive out to the beach and start running over all the sunbathers/cops....lol I thing the Anthrax makes me violent as well.
Transitioning from Retired Musician from cover bands to a Full time vocalist/frontman/guitarist in an original and covers band....it's been a while and this should get NASTY!

Ok, I have to highjack this thread for a moment to really make Thoraby sweat

Dr Newcenstein's latest atrocity:
The Kelly Mutt!

Performer series flametop Kelly body in Trans Red with Jackson JTX maple boarded neck, Jackson/Schaller Floyd, Gibson 498T(maybe? 15k on the sticker) in the bridge and Jackson J-80B (bridge model) in the neck. Silver sticker dot inlays. 24 frets and thin as an Ethiopian's forearm

Ever notice Debrah Harry does a voice in the game?

Anyhow, I like the feel of the Kelly. The only thing some people don't like that I actually prefer is the piece of wood that you can rest your right arm on. My Kelly is neck through and is not at all neckheavy. It is nicely balanced actually.

I have to say I didn't think the flametop looked right on a Kelly - a Metal shape shouldn't have "pretty" on it but the dotted maple board offsets it.
I may print some black sharkfins and stick em on, though - just to see
