  • Please help me fix up my KV1!

Hey guys., mentioned this in another thread, but I thought i'd make a new one just so you guys are more likely to see it.

I finally got the correct color tuners on my KV1, but there's 3 things it still needs, and I'm wondering if any of you could please help.

    1.
I need a switch tip for it! It was loose for a while, then flew off at a gig couple years back, never could find it, or another one that fit. The only other one i've seen that fit, was the one on my KV2. anyone know if jackson will send me one?

    2.
What current production kahler bridge would I need to buy to replace mine? I remember brooke did the swap a while ago.. not sure which bridge to buy. my kahler is kinda rusty, and half of the fine tuners don't work anymore. (they kind of raised up towards the headstock and turning them does nothing).
edit- did a search on this one and found what I needed to know. it's the kahler 7330

    3.
    Blade pickup replacement.

I want to buy whatever pickup dave used to have in the neck of his old king v pros.. was it a bill lawrence? I would just use the dimebucker I have lying around, but on the dimebucker the blades don't stick out enough to use them as frets.

Also, I don't care what it sounds like, so does anyone know a cheap alternative to a bill lawrence that would work for fretting (ala the last rites\loved to deth solo)

thanks for any help , you guys always rock

I thought it was the 3310 bridge?

Anyhoo, good luck finding those stovepipe switch tips. Might just better try some standard Switchcraft tips, or replace the switch.

Or did these come with a blade switch? I can't recall.

Bite the bullet and get the Lawrence pickup.

thx newc! it's a 3-way blade. it's like a strat, but the blade is longer and wider. does that help any?

is the lawrence pickup what dave had on the KV Pro's? (and possibly on his old BC Rich?) If so , which model.. i'm guessing 500xl?

about the bridge.. I believe the old name for it was the 3310, but now that kahler is back in business, they call it the 7330 now. looks the same to me http://www.wammiworld.com/b7330.php

The neck pickup is an L-500XL indeed.

I don't know much on the bridges, but I checked with the 1996 KV1 catalog and it's a Kahler 3310.

Hey guys, look at this picture I found. The blades look like they're almost as recessed into the pickup as the dimebucker. can anyone with the lawrence pickup confirm to me that they actually stick out from the pickup enough to use as frets, or did dave have a special one?

You can go with a 7330 if you want. It is the cost-reduced version of the original 3300, which is the brass saddled version of the mentioned 3310 (which has steel saddles). The 7330 is less expensive, is still made in the USA, but has some cast parts instead of milled. There are also some markings on it that look different from the vintage ones. If you are hell bent on the steel saddles and 100% period-correct parts, then shell out for the 3310 (nothing wrong with that).

I wonder if I could get the 7330 and then use my brass saddles?

I have contacted kahler in the past about it and I paid like 20 bucks for a couple replacement fine tuner parts, which didn't work at all, and they said they had no idea why.

worse comes to worse, where would I even get a 3310? Ebay and google don't seem to be turning up any purchasables

Hmm, sounds like all your old saddles are in good shape then? I'm wondering if you can't completely tear it down and clean it up with WD-40 and a brush. It is a major pain in the arse to do on a Kahler, but I've done it.

I meant to add, the thing you want to watch for on those old saddles is that the rollers aren't frozen. Those can be impossible to get freed up, and then you have to replace the entire saddle. If all six are moving freely, then refer back to this advice ^^^

FWIW Kahler still makes the 3310. I got a quote from them 6 months ago and am ordering one for my new GMP.

I have one of the ones made by Gibson, and the bars are recessed, (then again they're wider). I doubt this helps, but I figured I'd throw me cent in.

Maybe you can get a custom pickup with frets instead of bars?

I have a L-500XL I bought new a couple years ago (from Bill and Becky), and the blades are recessed too far to use as frets.

is it black or cream? The weird thing is, the cream ones look like the blades are protruding out a bit, (and if you look at old pics of dave in metallica with his BC Rich, you can see the same thing) but the black ones look recessed like a dimebucker. doesn't make much sense, but thats what i've noticed from pics.

since he supposedly makes them by hand, I'm going to see if I can get him to make me one that's like a hybrid

Mine is black. Hopefully he can custom make you one.
