  • Jackson brand from Charvel

Thanks to anyone who can help with this info. On and off Ive been collecting Charvels and Jacksons from the San Dimas Era for about 25 years. Generally Ive always played Gibsons. But over the years Ive collected quite a few very early Jackson Charvels.

Ive read all the stories online but can anyone explain a little about how and when the San Dimas Era guitars started to become Jackson branded guitars and when the strat shaped ones started to be phased out and what the change in the guitars looked like or how they can be identified.

    Thanks

This link has some good info on the early history of the company, and it answers some of your questions pretty well:

In the San Dimas era, the split was mostly that Charvel was bolt-on and Jackson was neckthrough, and as the link above says, Grover started using his own name as a brand because he didn't want to hurt the Charvel name in case the more radical shape of the Rhoads wasn't accepted. Around '86, when Charvel was turned into the import division, they started making USA Jackson strats that were basically the same thing that Charvel strats had been. There was also a brief period when some strats were made that had a Jackson headstock logo and a Charvel neckplate. Quite a few people think of these as Charvels and list them as such in galleries & logs, which makes sense since they do have a Charvel serial #.
