The good stuff is all gone. Buy a used guitar if you want the good stuff. I started noticing this on a batch of Metalic Black SL2H's that were in GC's a few years back. Every store I went to had the same guitar with the same ebony. I think it was pre-Fender. Since Fender, I've seen some good ones. They probably have better buying power to source better wood. But it looks like it ran out.

No, the general consensus is that the fretboard is probably just quite dry and that ebony isn't completely black anyway. It's all about the blues-rock chatter.

seriously, dano, some ebony looks a little more brownish. put some lemon oil on it. it will darken the board. if you want it to look unnaturally black, use some wood dye. follow the directions given above. if you like the guitar, buy it. it is a USA jackson - that means it is well built with quality materials. no shitty, fake-ass ebony....no sub-par ebony that is brown because of fender....NO excuses. it is only what has been said by prior posters.GEAR:
some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!
some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!
and finally....
i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Dude, the ebony on that guitar looks fine. If you condition it it will darken even more. If it's a good deal go for it____________________________________________

I have noticed the fretboard on my Custom Jackson has a little nicer and darker ebony than my Select USA SL2H, and needs far less conditioning.2003 Jackson SLATQH Custom (cobalt cabo), 2002 Jackson SLATQM (burnt cherry), 2011 Jackson Chris Broderick Soloist (transblack 7), 2007 SL2H (black)

No serial on the end?
Dyed ebony is ok, but in my experience it leaves a residue that can come off. Maybe they didn't wipe it all off or something, I dunno.
Striped ebony has a bit of character, like old-skool pre-ban Brazilian rosewood.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

That's a good looking ebony neck to me. Newc, I think I see a faint trace of a serial on the last "fret" it just doesn't look stamped very deep. Or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me and I think I see it 'cause I know it should be there. My Gear: Stoneman SG-1, Hufschmid Tantalum H6, ESP KH-6, Sully #8 JCF One-Off, Templar GuitarWorks Relic Prototype, James Hetfield Tribal Hunt KL Explorer, Coobeetsa CCG-10-DX PRO Eagle, Schecter Hellraiser C-1 Hybrid, Daly Heiro Custom, Gibson Les Paul Custom, Gibson SG Menace, Peavey Vypyr 60 Tube
