Some of you noodles need to look up what feminism means. Criticizing a female guitarist and comparing her to a male player with the same skill level is in line with the foundation of feminism. Unjustified praise is against feminism, it makes women seem weaker/less talented. Post-modern-what-the-fuck?"There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The whole feminist movement has gone beyond asking for equal rights. Now many women (girls really) just milk the fact they have breasts to get ahead of a much larger pool of equal and more talented men. I see it in engineering as well, where 100 guys who are better designers, have better degrees and have better resumes are overlooked because there is one candidate who wears a skirt. Either the company is too scared not to hire them incase they sue for discrimination or the girl showed so much cleavlege in the interview that she sent all the wrong messages to her new boss. And all this celebrety media culture makes it OK to do that!
Enough is enough.

At least you can look up what you need at home and not have to seek out a teacher or wear your vinyl down trying to learn from it by ear. So, yes having more resources at your fingertips does make learning easier, ask any teacher.......................Originally posted by Axegrinder87 View PostSure it's different, but not much. I hit a wall when I was 15. Didn't get any better by the time I was 20. Started playing with a genius in theory, and I'd say my playing has tripled since. Technique isn't quite as good as it was, since I'm not training for the Olympics anymore. If you're serious about improving, try getting lessons.
This abundance of material can lead to misinformation, confusion about what & how to practice, the distraction of all these different methods touting themselves as "The One True Way" to get good fast, trying to learn too much at once hence retaining little of it (lack of focus), the fact that many people are not good at learning without guidance.
It still takes effort to get good? That hasn't changed. The time in, hands on the fretboard, running scales, jamming for hours over tunes & backing tracks, all of that is still required.
What I see here is (largely) a bunch of grumpy old men who feel their chops were harder won, to quick to write off any young musician as less worthy because "it's easier to get good now". That kid may have access to more training matter & tools than ever before, but if they are any good, it's because they had a guitar in their hands and they worked at it. Just as it ever was.
So what do we whinge about now? That kids these days have no self-discipline to knuckle down and learn an instrument, wanting the instant gratification of Guitar Hero & Rock Band? Or that it's so easy to learn to play now that everyone is good, so some 14 year old who shows some aptitude is nothing to be impressed by?
I didn't start playing at all until around 12 so a kid that could play Jason Becker or Yngwie stuff, even sloppily, would have impressed the SHIT out of me at 14.Hail yesterday

What you are describing is the opposite of that. The young girls you speak of act like their gender is weaker and need special favours to be able to get through. And balless dudes are letting it happen by being afraid of confronting the matter and being out for equal rights."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The internet has a lot of tools that help you learn, but it still takes practice and effort.
And everyone here saying tabs weren't available.... wtf? Tabs were available for almost everything you wanted if you were willing to spend a few bucks.
And yeah, a lot of you can say "not impressed" or whatever. Have you guys actually been part of a music scene or are you just idiots? Support your local musicians and those aspiring to be. Or you end up one of those old dickwads that nobody wants to play with. The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

I don't know about that. My old man always told me, "Do it right, or don't do it at all". To reward mediocrity is pointless. I'm not part of the "no child left behind" camp. We keep score at my games."Today, I shat a brown monolith ..majestic enough for gods to stand upon" BillZ aka horns666

Here's a much better example... instead of some mindless copy of technique from someone else's song she's actually a real genuine musician. Give it a test, if you don't want to look at the pretty girl, just close your eyes and see if her playing seems pleasant to your ears instead. Sweet tone, perfect bends, nice phrasing and an excellent vibrato, girl or not.
And Xeno is 100% correct, the only difference between now and "back in the day" is that technology allows us to see many more people from all over the world than ever before. "Back in the day" you wouldn't ever know these people existed since they only ever played in their bedrooms and what-not.
Anyone can learn from tabs, videos, books or lessons and be a mindless robot for sure, that hasn't changed one bit.
