I know the old saying that the value of an opinion is generally inversely proportional to the strength with which it is held.

If they have it listed for $200, they probably paid $100 for it, maybe $80. I know the pawn joint by me tries to pay half of what its really worth. Offer $150 and see if they bite.

A kid I know went to the Pawn Shop with a MiM Fender Strat and they wanted to give him $125 for it then went to $150 firm. Retail should be around $300-350. He wanted $300.

should that be a surprise to anyone? Pawn Shops are in business to make money. They aren't the devil. If the kid wanted $300, he should have sold it himself. If he couldn't (or wouldn't) sell it himself, he takes a hit in the back pocket for the convenience of getting money quickly.

Giving someone fair market value means the pawn broker will make no money on the guitar. If they factor in their profit margin, they advertise the guitar for an unsellable price and leave themselves no room to negotiate without taking a loss.
                      Hail yesterday
