  • My model 3 is back!

Back in 86/87, I took guitar lessons at a local shop in town here. Before my lessons, I always played this Charvel model 3 guitar they had. It was my dream guitar at the time. One day after my lesson, my mom was talking to the owner of the shop about the guitar & she said to me "so.... this is the one you have your heart set on? Of corse, I'm like YEAHHH!! She told the owner that she'd take it & told me to pick out the amp I wanted also. I couldn't believe this was happening. I wanted a Marshall JCM 800. It was kinda expensive but she said "ok, we"ll take that too". I was shocked that this was happening. I had no clue I was gonna be getting this gear. It was probably the best day of my life at this point. lol. Anyway, my mom had cancer at the time. She had saved money for a really long time to do this for me. In a way I believe it was a farewell gift for me. My mom was always the "cool mom" that all my friends also loved. She was such a sweet & thoughtful person. She passed away a year later. Like a dumbass, I traded the guitar in the early 90's. Money was tight & I needed a new amp at the time. I've regretted this every day of my life since. Well, after 20 years of searching for the same exact guitar I finally found one. A guy in CA was selling one on ebay. I contacted him & he took it off the site & held it for me. Also gave me a great deal on it. I got it last week!! Just seeing the thing brought back so many good memories for me! It plays exactly like my old one, same hardware, trem, pups, etc & I LOVE it!! Finally redeemed myself!! This was my first "nice" guitar & I'll keep this one forever! Sorry for ranting! lol. Here she is!!

Very cool story. Your mom sounds like a really great person. Great that you got the same guitar back. For some reason I always seem to end up with black guitars. I really love that off white color.

I mentioned this in another thread, but if you ever decide that trem is giving you fits, try the Kahler 2700. These are killer trems and drop right in. They are locking but you don't have to cut the ball ends. Also very adjustable. We had a pretty big thread on them recently. I've had one since the late 1980s. I'd even say that because they are such a big hunk of steel, they improve the tone of the axe too.

damn cool story. lost my dad to cancer a few years ago, and my mom has cancer now. thanks for sharing it. my dad bought me a RR5 the last christmas he was alive. he knew I was eyeing this one up locally at a guitar store. he had my mom drive him there as he was pretty weak. he went in and bought it and brought it right to my house, he didnt even wait for christmas. he knew it was going to be his last christmas and wanted to do something very special for me. I think of my dad every time I look at that guitar.

@tonemonster, so sorry to hear about your parents. I have lost alot of loved ones due to cancer. My mom was only 41 y.o when she passed away. I was 18 at the time & it changed my life & outlook on life in so many ways. Hearing your story about the RR5 was very inspiring to hear. I'ts so cool that you'll be able to look at it & think about your dad! That's priceless! I'm sure you'll cherish that one for the rest of your life! That made my day hearing this as I can relate to it so much. Would love to see pics of it!! I will be sending you prayers for your mom brother. Take care & thanks for sharing!!! Stay positive!!! jeff
