  • Favorite pickup in your ProMod?

Be it US or MIJ, what's you favorite pickup (combo) in these?

For me, The Aqua with a JB sounds fantastic.

I'm building a white So Cal ProMod, but this one has a maple fretboard and non-recessed floyd (don't think that impacts the tone but you never know). I'm thinking of trying something other than a JB, but now sure what. Thinking Duncan Custom, Duncan Distortion, Invader, Super Distortion, Tone Zone. Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. Didn't the San Dimas models come with a Tone Zone?

I love the Tone Zone in my Candy Blue Pro Mod. Super versatile and sounds fantastic!

Out of the dozen or so pickups I tried out in the 6 pro-mods I owned, my favorites were the Dimarzio AT-1 (Andy Timmons model) and a close second the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAFs.

SoCal came with the TZ. I hate the TZ. I'd also throw the Full Shred into the "should have tried" mix, but I don't have them any more.

I currently have a San Dimas Pro Mod in Slime Green. I had a Duncan Distortion/Jazz combo at first, then I tried a Dimarzio Super Distortion/Super Distortion combo, then an EMG 81/85 combo and have finally settled on a Duncan Custom Custom/Jazz combo. The Duncan Distortion didn't sound too good. The Dimarzios sounded better, The EMG's sounded good too, but the Duncan Custom Custom sounds fantastic at the present.

I'm gonna try a JB with an Alnico II magnet swap in one, aka Holdsworth / DeMartini. I reckon that will be spot on in these guitars with the JB coils!

I like The Tonezone and JB and I have a Duncan Distortion in the Hardtail wildcard which works well, but I wouldn't want to try it with a floyd - too searing high octane - and you have to be in the mood for it as sweet and versatile it is not, deafening, ear ringing and headache inducing it is.

I will be paffing one out with Dimarzio Anniversary '59 set for a different lower output, more responsive feel, see how that goes,
unless I see any better suggestions.

depends what you're into, I like dry crunchy tones, searing upper mid tones but I also like rolled off sweetness and harmonics.

Anyone try a 498T in there ProMod? Or one with swapped magnets?

I thought I want to go the Duncan Custom or Duncan Distortion route, but I'm having a hard time finding a cheap TB5 or TB6, and I have a 498T sitting there.

I have a Bare Knuckle Holy Diver in my Wild Card #6 that oozes 80's and sounds like it was wound for that guitar.

The Duncan Custom is my go to pickup and it sounds great in everything I every tried it in.....EXCEPT the Socal Promod I tried it in recently! I figured it would be better than the Tonezone that came stock, but no, it was waaaaay too bright. So I put the TZ back in...which still is bright, but not nearly as much as the custom. I also have a tele promod body paired with a Model series neck, also with a TZ, and it doesn't sound nearly a bright as the socal.

Maybe it's that particular piece of alder, or the route it has, or the all maple neck....or all the above that contributes to the brightness, almost like an EMG 81...did I mention it's bright! BTW, these are my first alder bodies (that I know of), so maybe I need to reserve the custom pickup for the other woods. But, mine may be an oddball. I'm curious how others find the Duncan custom in these bodies.

I like the JB in all of my guitars. I've been wanting to try a PAF type pup like a SD 78 but every time I plug in the JBs just sound so good I don't want to change a thing.

I put Full Shreds in my MIJ San Dimas and i'm loving it. I'm happy with the Dimarzio's in my USA So Cal.

I had an EVH Frankenstein in the bridge, it had a awsome tone. It was nice and open but still had a lot of crunch.

I'm using a Timmons in the bridge and a Liquid Fire in the neck with the DiMarzio 3 way so I can get the 2 inside coils in the middle position for some single coil sounds.
