  • Cheers from Ibanez land.

So I really want to get a jackson/charvel as they are really great, but which one ?

I seem to like the Ibanez Jem rg550 types, what JC is along those lines pls ?

    Cheers AG

One of the various import Dinkies will be the closest specwise Jackson to an RG series. Unfortunately, currently the only shipping models are the "X Series"

Crafted with the demands of the discernible player in mind, Jackson guitars give you the shapes, finishes and tones you love. From the venerable Rhoads, Soloist, Warrior and more, shop Jackson for the highest performance.

The older DK2/DK2M/DKMG should be still in stock at a lot of places though.

I have a DK2M and an RG550. Sort of similar, but the bodies are different wood (Alder vs. Basswood).

If you are an Ibby fan, you probably like a real thin neck. I absolutely love my DK2M, but the neck feels ever so slightly thicker (maybe it's just me) than my DXMG or DX1 Professional, but still like DonP said.. The DK2M is very nice!

The thinnest necks are Fusions, but they are a 24.75" scale. The MIJ ones have basswood bodies (except for certain special models, like the Fusion HH which is mahogany).

Find a mid 90's Dinky, Dinky reverse, Fusion to try out. They have the thinnnest necks as said above. I have 2 few friends that are Ibanez guys and they each said that the '94 & 95' dinkys that I have are just as comfortable to them as their Ibby's are.

In honesty, if you like the Jems and 550s, there’s nothing much that J/C do or have done that really feels like that IMO. I’m a full on Jackson guy, but I’ve recently played a few RGs and Jems, and Jackson just don’t do anything like that.

Of course, it’s all subjective, but I have to say that I think J/C stuff looks waaaaay better, but then the recent RGs etc that I’ve played have been butchered. This guy local to me buys cheap ones off craigslist and just destroys them – sands all the paint off, burns and stains them, and he’s got this strange habit of putting singlecoils in the bridge – yikes! LOL His last ‘project’ was to gold leaf a Destroyer body...... Oh, and also you don’t want that wannabe shredder association that comes with Ibanez
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

The thing I dislike about the Ibanez's are the thin necks..... Every time I find myself playing fast and sweeping etc it on those... Racer X etc... I think the J/C are thicker and more cumbersome, which may slow me back down to where I need to be.... Iron Maiden etc....

I will look into some of the ones suggested here, thanks for the info, its nice to be in the company of real players that know what they are talking about...

I am an older man and just picked up guitar again, so I have lots to learn about these things.,...

I'm also an old fart...45 and counting.
I happen to have a few Ibanez and Jackson guitars of different models.
RG550 & RG570 (the old ones with the really thin necks, pre AANJ) ,
                  RG1570, PGM100 and a cheap sevenstring.
                  A couple of RR1:s, a CS Soloist, a Fusion Pro, a DKMG and a DK2M.
Of those the 550/570 has the thinnest necks, followed by the Fusion,
the CS Soloist and the 1570.
When I shift between the Ibanez and Jackson guitars it allways takes a
couple of minutes to find my way around the neck.
I used to like the thin necks alot, but nowadays I tend to like the slightly
thicker Jackson necks more and more.
The DK2M, DKMG and the Fusion Pro are really nice guitars considering the price.

The Outcaster has a very thin profile. Very wizard like. I believe the JTX also has a similar neck profile as they were from the same years . There's others that are about wizard/RG thin but, without taking out the caliper, its a subjective call left to opinion.

Maybe not. I have only one RG550, a 1990 model, and it just sounds different than any of my C/J's. Of course it has a Super D which none of my C/J's have, but the 'feel' is different.

Intreresting ..... It would be cool to see some pics. It seems a few of us have some old Ibanez's !

I too prefer the pre 1993 models with the square neck heel.

Curious, has anyone Shaved down any of the Jacksons neck a little to find a sweet spot in your playing ?

I have some old Ibby's...Love em, nothing better for me....88-RG570 and an 89-saber, also a JS100 with a gotoh floyd and another low end cheapass one....

JEMS are amazing guitars. I love Jackson, but for me...the ibby's are my number 1....

                          I would buy a JEM!

I have played some of the newer ones, and it seems the same years 1987-1993 at the fujigen factory were the best one ( with the square neck heel )

Would love to see some pics !!

Shawn Lane had a Charvel right ?

If you want a thicker neck maybe go with a Soloist. I used to love really thin necks but often found my hand cramping up when playing on the 12th fret and up. I found the perfect compromise in the "standard" Jackson neck. Thicker than what I had been using, but still not a Fender or Gibson baseball bat neck. For some reason I found I had more control with the thicker neck as well.
