  • J/C Using the J50BC without the 1200 mid boost.... Any good??

My Model 6 is missing/lacking high frequence harmonics and seems to squash the bite on the top end. Some people complain that the active mid boost is the cause. I'd like to know if anyone has done a comparision with and without the 1200 boost circuit ???? I have tried 2 different humbuckers in the bridge and that same lack of harmonics is always there. I've tried different amps, direct in, different speaker cabs. Without the boost circuit, what changes can I expect? Are the stock pups any good in a passive set up?

The J50's are always passive even if you use a preamp. The J50BC is a decent mid-output humbucker. Boosting the signal does help, but they're decent on their own.

By high frequency harmonics, are you talking about pinch harmonics or just getting normal overtones? If it's the former, try raising your action a little or find a pickup with a little more midrange?

Turn the mid boost down treble all the way up if you want harmonics.J50's are great sounding pick ups.
Check the battery as well.If your tone sounds squashed thats usually the problem.
Don't leave the guitar plugged in all the time, that will run the battery down in no time.

I have a 1988 Jackson Dinky with a J50BC in it - no boost. How does it sound? Ever hear of a dude named Van Halen? This is MY formula to get his tone. It's not HIGH gain, but it's HUGE on tone!

That's what I wanted to know......

Thx for the replies... Using the J50-BC passive and sounding good. I don't want high output for my use. I'll disconnect the mid/boost circiut and see if I like the sound.... I have to check the pots for proper ohms load. I don't know if the stock pots are good for passive use (ohm wise). Any suggestions on pots for passive set up????

CTS 500K pot for that humbucker. I have also used Dimarzio 500Ks and the EVH low friction 500K and all worked great in my builds.
