Alder Soloist Tone Question

I've read lots of articles like that. Some decent. Some hogwash. That one falls somewhere in the middle. Most of what they say is true, but they aren't telling the whole truth. For example, all of that talk in points 2 & 3 about harmonics is true.....but only with the open strings and open string harmonics. Once a string is fretted that goes out the window because all of the harmonics shift. I don't know many guitarists that play only open strings on their guitars. Did you try the experiment I mentioned in the previous post?Last edited by Chad; 05-28-2013, 01:49 PM.

I was actually debating between a Duncan Custom, Custom Custom, and the BKP before I finally decided on the BKP. If the BKP doesn't work out the Custom is definitely the next option. Acoustically it's fine. As someone mentioned earlier, it probably "sounds" exactly like it is supposed to. I don't think it's a dud at all, more along the lines of I've gotten used to the prominent low end of my Gibson after playing it for a couple days in a row. As for the tone that I'm looking for with my SL, I almost always keep it set up a half-step down and play primarily 80s rock. I don't want the Gibson tone, I just want some damn low end haha.

Like I said previously, if you don't like that JB, try a Super Distortion. They're cheap, they do low end well and keep tight down-tuned and they also sound great in mahogany... and again, they're cheap... like $30-$40 all day long and easy to find. The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

Going from a Les Paul to a Soloist is always a big change for me. I generally have the EQ setting I like memorized for a quick change or set up different channels on the amp (JVM 410H) for different guitars. Have you tried tweaking the EQ on your amp to see if you can get a tone you like with the Soloist?1997 Dark Candy Red SL1

Has anyone ever used the Duncan Crazy 8 pickup? After reading about it it sounds like a viable option to replace my JB.
EDIT: I just had everything installed (Holy Diver Pickup, Brass Block, Brass Spring Claw, Heavy Duty Noiseless Springs, and Stainless Steel Block Screws), and this guitar is a whole new beast. No more ice pick mids, more pronounced low end, the same smooth highs, and just overall a greater feel to the guitar. The HD is rated as as having slighly lower output than the JB, but I can't tell a difference...actually, if anything I feel that it has more growl and warmth to it. The new springs feel so much better as well. I think I'm finally happy with the sound.Last edited by Viper_Roxx; 07-25-2013, 11:55 PM.

If we're on the same page regarding this I have a 32mm brass block to install, a brass spring claw, and heavy springs. Is that what you're talking about?
Good to see it worked out for you! It's all about the blues-rock chatter.
