I'd play whatever you can get your hands on at local shops and stick to your price range. I have an old jackson cheap-o that absolutely rocks. Upgraded it over the years, and while its not as nice as my USA it is one killer guitar nonetheless...

So, I think I found one. Plays smooth! 2008(I assume)MIJ sls3. HH Duncan's string through with tone pros bridge, ebony fb. It has real MOP rectangular inlays with abolone "shark eyes" and neck is bound. That binding is one thing that always turned me off of the sl3. Also, it's new old stock. $1300 but no case.
Does 2008 MIJ mean anything? Wasn't that post Fender takeover?

I never even thought of that, that's a great idea for anyone that's lost the blocks!

Fender took over in 2003, so yeah, the SLS3 is a post-Fender model.

I had one in white, and it was a fucking awesome axe. Had a fat neck that was easy for me to play, killer inlays, was light enough to play for hours, and sounded great.
It's a Japan-made neckthrough just a shade below the 1990 neckthrough Pro models IMO.

I do wish the body had been a 1/2" thicker and had a Floyd, but that's just me.

While I'm a firm believer that a neckthrough USA or Japan-made Jackson in playable condition is easily worth $1000, $1300 without a hard case is questionable. Granted I did pay around that for mine and it only came with a bag, I bought it from a friend's shop, so I paid extra for a hard case just to be a pal and help the guy out.

Great looking guitar, no doubt.
Those serials are date-coded. ex: 08xxxx=2008
96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.
