DKMGT - a killer guitar at a cool price. Matt at OSG still has one, I think. They play really well, but don't have Duncans.

Well, for $800 you can probably get a USA
Soloist used, so you're okay that way.
Kellys are real nice but are rather neck
heavy; they tend to nosedive if you let go of the neck. The neckthrough guitars
are maple down the center, mostly with poplar wings. There's an ongoing debate as to whether poplar is similar to alder sonically, and also whether the body wings or the neck-through maple neck are the determining factors of sound.

I would suggest playing a boatload of guitars before deciding. You can use the local music stores' stock to decide what you want, but if their prices are out of line, take what you learned to Ebay and save some $. Look at it as a serious trip to Disneyland! See how the instruments sound acoustically to you as well; pickups can be changed, but good resonance is inborn. If a store is noisy
I'll put my ear to the body and strum a few chords. You can hear the tonality pretty well that way, enough to compare one to the other anyway. Make a day of it, or a month of Saturdays if you need!

lerx - Thanks, man. I'm already familiar with the Kelly's nosedive problem in that my new bass is a KBX. To be honest, I really don't mind the nosedive that much. Thanks for your USA Soloist suggestion, though. [img]images/icons/cool.gif[/img] I'll see if I can find anything used.

Okay, Jimmy B nailed it in few words! That guitar fits your list except for the EMG HZs instead of Duncans. Cheap as it is you could put any Duncans you like in aftermarket. Most guys don't like the
HZs, but a few have said they did like 'em, so I'd play it first and see what you think. You might just change the bridge pickup out first if the budget's tight; it's more critical for most.

That's very true. If I don't like the stock HZs, I might put a JB in the bridge. The pickup thing is actually the last of my priorities.

Don't own a DKMGT, but played several. Nice guitars for the $ and it fits what you're looking for. Nice necks, good feel to the body. You also may want to look at the SLSMG, but that would be at the upper end of your price range. Also, if you can find a DR6 - bolt on dinky, reverse neck, 22 fret, string thru - you'd really like that. They only made them for a few years so they are somewhat hard to find. I've seen them go for as little as $200 on ebay.

I like the look of the SLSMG and it has an ebony board, but I think fake MOP pihrana inlays? I like that they are all mahogany neckthru, string-thru,and ebony board, but they are kinda expensive, and I don`t know how many they sell, but I am guessing not very many, and I can see them beeing discontinued in the near future, considering Jackson is coming out with a USA type of that, aren`t they or something close? Jack.

This isn't going to make a whole lot of sense, but here goes. I can understand you not wanting a Floyd, they are a real pain in the butt, however I have two Fusions, a Jackson, and a Charvel which both have Floyds. They are both blocked, and to be honest, I think I prefer a blocked Floyd to a tunomatic. I definitely prefer the 24-3/4" (Gibson) scale, so that's why I like the Fusions, short scale + blocked Floyd = nice & stable shred monster that I can retune at will and not have to worry about balancing the f**king floating bridge.

I'd also recommend a DR6 like Pitboss suggested. Either that or try to find a Dinky HX (only about 100 made in '94, string-thru TOM bridge, rosewood board with offset white plastic dot inlays, master push/pull coil tap on the tone control). I've got two and love them. If you can find one, go for it!

With multiple guitars there's no reason to retune - just tune one to each tuning you use and leave it.

Yep I say the DR6 aswell, the DR6 in amber burst I tried in a GC a few years ago is the main reason I just ordered a SL2 in ... yep.. ambersunburst

Ahhh yep thats the one. I only wish the SL2 came with a tung-oiled neck.
