• Awful flame tops.

    See the two pictures below:

The two sides on the green one don't even have the same color! It's incredible that such high end guitars have such awful flame tops.

When I bought my trans blue KV2, I was very fortunate. I bought it from GuitarXpress, and the guitar was exactly as pictured, with a fantastic flame. However, I would never buy any figured-top guitar without very detailed pics. I'm amazed that the worst tops I've seen have been expensive guitars, often Gibsons. The ugliest (matched or not) have been LTDs and Brian Moore's, that looked like corduroy!

I wonder if the angle of the sunlight is having an effect on the finish of the those guitars. In both instances the sun is fairly low in the sky and hitting the guitars from the side. Would each side of the flame tops reflect light different? And would the flamage look the same in the controlled lighting of a studio?

I don't really know, just throwing ideas out there. I'm not really partial to flame tops anyway.

I do think the light angle is screwing the green, but that black one has very noticeably different flame.
Overall, I have not seen a Jackson flametop worth admiring. I had an Archtop Soloist that had a Quilted top that I'd kill for but the production modelflames I've seen have been ho-hum. (Note I emphasized production model - I'm sure someone's going to throw out a pic of a Custom Shop, but that's not where it counts. It only counts in General Population)

By the same token, I've seen PRSs that look like tree bark instead of flame.

          Sully's transpurple flame is bee-yooo-tee-ful!

Warmoth's got some nice-looking dyed bodies as well.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm thinking along the same lines. I'll bet in artificial light, or even at a different angle, both guitars would look better.

The green does look bad, but I kinda like the trans black even though it definately doesn't match.

Some people don't know how/care to take good pics. What you see above is CLEARLY light imperfections in the film. If a "Seen in real-life" J-30 POS looks better than a "Seen in real-life" Soloist, I'd be cornswaggled.

Here's some cool flame on my Hamer and Carvin. They look pretty good in the pics, but they look much better in person. http://members.aol.com/stratotone/hamerflame.jpg

Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of that in 2000-2002.

Maybe if they took those in ****tty light, then they would look good, or took really crap pictures, but they just look awful.

I have seen them when they sand the flame on the guitar, they sand it sooooo thin, you can see the other wood that it caps.

                        That is just nuts.

                          Since we're postin' pics..

Warmoth here, Tung Oil only on this one..

Looks a little weird colorwise, but I can assure you that it's because of the angle of the light, that top is one color all the way across.. Amost seems to change color/shade depending on how the light hits it.
