  • Would you trade two Charvel So-Cals for one Jackson SL2H?

A local person offered to trade me his black Jackson SL2H for both my 2009 USA Charvel So-Cal (polar white) and my 2011 Japanese Charvel So-Cal (candy red). All guitars come with hardshell cases. (The USA Charvels didn't come with matching original hardcases so I'm including the G&G case I bought for that guitar.)

According to him and from what I can see in his photos, his SL2H is mint. My USA So-Cal is maybe 90% and my Japanese So-Cal is probably 98%.

I don't play my So-Cals as much as I probably should, even though they might have the most comfortable necks I've ever played, with that amazing "bare" feel to the maple. Yet, a weird part of me feels like I'd be losing, despite the retail value of a USA So-Cal was way less than the retail value of an SL2H.

If it were an SL2HT or an SLATQH, I would probably be jumping all over the trade.

Just help me bounce some thoughts around. Neither of us is in any particular rush to get rid of our guitars.

Black SL2H's are a dime a dozen. I think you'd be on the losing end.

Update: Might be a moot point now because I sold the Japanese So-Cal this evening to a private buyer. It was, objectively, an awesome guitar, but I just never played it.

I updated the original hopeful trader with this bit of news. He and I have progressed on to a variation of the original deal, whereby he would trade me his SL2H for my USA So-Cal and the cash from the sale of the Japanese So-Cal... which would still essentially be a "no" to you DonP and Vass?

It's funny, I'm known on JCF for being able to find great deals on used metal guitars across Canada, but this particular deal is one where I need advice since I'm not much of a trader.

Would have to know how much cash. Straight up trade no cash, yes. But I just don’t see the soloist as that much of a jump up from a USA SoCal to make a ton of cash necessary.

best way to o think about it is probably to see what each are going for on EBay and go from there. If you’re patient I think you can see the soloist for $1200 or so.... interestingly the same price I see USA SoCals listing, if not sold for, in used ads.

You can pick up a used Black SL2H for $1,100-$1,200 USD. They are a dime a dozen. Just be patient. They come and go quickly in that price range. Even better deals come along from time to time. I have a black SL2H that I got off of Reverb for under $1,100.

One of the so cals can probably fetch what, $700-800 USD? Seems to me that you are upside down on this deal.

Frig the money, get yourself that USA.

I sold the Japanese So-Cal last night for about USD$530, which is a bit more than I originally paid for it. Essentially that USD$530 cash would accompany the USA So-Cal in the trade for the trader's SL2H, but after heeding all the above replies and considering my options (and my own personal rule for only buying deals, which includes USA J/Cs under USD$1000) I will likely decide to pass.

He's selling the SL2H for USD$1500 outright, if I wanted to do an all-cash deal.

What say you, Mudlark, about the year of manufacture? 2011? It looks like the Set-Up was performed by Nazis.

This is good advice here. If you'd be adding more than $300-400, you'd probably be better off just selling the So Cal and buying an SL2H outright from someone else. $1,500 is too much IMO. (Not that it's not worth it, just because they're pretty easy to find a decent amount cheaper.)

I'd say USA So Cal plus no more than $200- $300 for the trade.

The S/N does not correspond to the year 2011, it's way older than that. U20XXX are from 2007, Mudlark will know better.

You're likely right, in my posting haste I somehow mistakenly interpreted the Final Inspection date of 11/22 to mean "2011 / whatever 22 means" It obviously means "November 22nd" of whatever year that was.

There's another local SL1T for USD$1050 but I haven't moved on that one because, while the natural colored flametop is gorgeous, it's just not my cup of tea.
