  • Having trouble identifying an old Jackson

    Hello!

I've been through the "How to tell..." page a few times but I can't figure it out. It's a KV that I got in 2003 and the serial number is 010807, which suggest a "Professional MIJ" model made in 1990 but it doesn't say "Pro" or anything (except "Jackson®") on the headstock, so I don't know. It's got the fins, Seymour Duncan humbuckers and a "Jackson Licensed Under Floyd Rose Pats." tremolo.

The closest I've gotten is this: "KV-4 - Neckthrough, Japanese-made, rosewood, fins, H-H, locking trem" from https://www.jcfonline.com/threads/51...ckson-you-have but that's not very specific, so any help would be very appreciated!

Edit: Also, any information on the tremolo model would be great!

Yes picture from front and back would be best. Otherwise its very hard to identify the exact model.

If the specs line up with the KV4, then that's probably what you have.
        Though, that's a 2001 Japan serial. A '90 neck thru serial would have a 'J' before the digits....J01XXXX-1990.

The 2000's MIJ neck thru serials dropped the J and used the first two digits to indicate the year...00xxxx-2000 and 10xxxx-2010.

Stock trem should be the JT580LP.
        96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

That's it! That explains why it didn't seem to fit in with serial number database.

The tremolo is getting kind of worn and I'm looking replace it, probably with a Schaller, but how do I know what model will fit? It looks like the Schaller Tremolo (not the Lockmeister) is a similar size (it doesn't have to screws sticking out as far in the back), is that correct?

          Here's a picture:

I'm almost certain a Schaller won't fit, but you'd better get another opinion.

That would probably take an ORF or Gotoh, but again, I'm no tremolo authority.

The Schaller Lockmeister is "identical" to the OFR, and the OFR is a direct swap with the JT580LP, so logic dictates that the Schaller Lockmeister will fit into the JT580LP route.

              OFR in a JT580LP route:

If it were me, I would want the Lockmeister over the standard Schaller Tremolo anyway. The Lockmeister (and OFR) has a one-piece hardened steel baseplate, which means the knife edges are part of the single piece. The standard Schaller Tremolo's baseplate is likely zinc with hardened steel knife edge inserts.

Read more here: http://audiozone.dk/index-filer/TremoloInfoProject.htm (Just substitute JT590 for the standard Schaller Tremolo as they are they same, and substitute Original Floyd Rose for the Schaller Lockmeister.)

I didn't know that part about the knife edges. I thought the Lockmeister wouldn't fit because of the screws protruding in the back but since it does (it seems) I think I'll go with that instead. If the studs don't fit can I keep the old ones in though? I've read some conflicting stuff about sizes of the bushings and whatnot...
