• Custom Shop lead times

Well, GAS has struck again, and I am looking at a Custom Shop this time. Is it me, or have I been seeing more and more posts about the custom shop improving greatly on build up and ship times on Custom Shop orders? I guess I wanted to see what the consensus was and go from there. I know the dealer will give you a time frame, but the only way you can really gauge it is by asking all my fellow JCFers that have placed Custom Shop orders recently and see what their experiences have been. For those of you who have received your Custom Shop order recently, how accurate was delivery time quoted to you?

Thanks in advance

They're shooting for 120 days on most orders. Obviously, something completely crazy is gonna take longer.

Yeah, that's the standard response you get from the dealers. That's why I was curious what the ACTUAL times have been running. Mine wouldn't be too out of the norm. Looking for a bolt on, birdseye board and neck, no fretmarkers, 3 single coils and a killer quilted maple top over Mahogany body. Maybe if I wait long enough they might make Strat Heads an option, ( I know, I know...dont hold my breath!...lol)

Doesn't sound too crazy ( except the strathead ! ). I'm ordering a no frills string-thru dinky - basically a DK1 with no trem. I figure the 120 days will be done easily, probably even quicker.

As the guy that currently takes all of the Custom orders and helps schedule them - the turnaround is little over 150 days. At this time, I'm taking orders for April production. In other words, if you place your order this week, you'll see the guitar sometime in April. Of course, if it's a double neck, or has some detailed graphics, you can expect to wait a bit longer. Also, I recommend going with a dealer that has some experience ordering Customs - there is some paper work that needs to be completed prior to securing a slot in the queue - any delays can cost you a month. There are dealers that order a few Custom guitars a month and they've got the routine down! Mike Shannon can only build a certain number per month, and as those slots get filled, we move to the next month.

I hope this helps!

Wow! Straight from the Horses mouth so to speak ( no offense McD). I guess I have my answer. Sounds fair enough. Sure beats the 12 to 18 months of recent past. I guess I better get on the ball and make up my mind.

Thanks again McD!

Re: Custom Shop lead times

If I ordered a custom guitar to the exact same scecs as the SL2H (or any other USA select model) would it be exactly the same, or would it play/sound better?
Just something I've always wondered

That's a HUGE improvement over the times that were posted on here last year. Kudos!!!

I think someone posted here last year they waited like 14 months or something.....so 4 months or even 5 ain't that bad at all.

I ordered my custom order in May 2002. The order was confirmed in June 2002. In June 2003 the guitar was completed and arrived in August 2003.

Re: Custom Shop lead times

Hey Brian how much of each custom is Mike actually doing? I would guess he isn't building the guitar entirely himself. Would that be a correct assesment? But just what specific parts of the build is Mike doing for customs?

Thanks,
Chris

If I may ask .. If I were to order a hardtail is the custom shop still using the heavy brass hardtails or newer stamped versions like the ones fender uses
