Re: Were you a gear whore this year?

Oh, and I bought a couple of extra rack units from Diablomozart. They are the Rockman Chorus and Sustain units. He's good people and very fair with his prices IMO. Also Gwarghoul sold me a JB that's on its way to me. He's trustworthy too. Both highly recommended.

I was wondering if you can comment on that fretless Agile Les Paul too? I've been thinking about one for some time now.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The Antigua you saw couldn't have been mine - mine sold and I've never had an auction with a reserve. It was a VERY cool guitar with crappy pickups. I upgraded the pickups to a pair of Kinman's and a JB Jr. in the neck. I sold it to fund the KV2T.

As for the Agile guitar, it is one of those guitars that when reviewing it you must end or begin each sentence with "for the money". IOW, it is a great guitar for the money. For the money, a better fretless guitar could not be had. For the money, it is not bad. Truthfully, it is a great guitar for the money. I am very impressed with the Agile compared to other import knock offs. It is definitely nicer than any Epiphone I've played recently. It has Grover tuners, great fit and finish, and it actually sounds very good for a $199 guitar (there we go again with "for the money"). They did one jackass thing with this guitar: when selecting a pickup ring to hold the neck pickup they did not compensate for the fact that the guitar has no frets so the strings will hit the top of the pickup even at the lowest setting. It appears that they used the same parts and neck/body design for the fretless as they did the fretted models not thinking that the fretless guitar wouldn't have those jumbo frets to give it a bit of lift over the neck pickup. It's an easy fix - find a thinner ring or just sand down the one it came with.

The real problem with the Agile fretless guitar is that everything is out of tune unless I am playing just open strings.

Does giving it up count as a gear whore too? I've sold or traded a couple this year! Good thing is that I don't give it away for free. I charge $ for my stuff. Guess I'm a gear whore then...

...almost forgot that I've got a set of Tom Holmes pickups coming that'll probably go in the Rhoads. I spoke with Tom a week or two ago and he said they'd be here in early December.

Re: Were you a gear whore this year?

This was a quiet year for me. I bought only a used Hamer USA Californian Deluxe, a Peavey TNT80 bass combo, and a handful of stompboxes. I recently got to work on building a Jackson Stealth from parts, but that's more of a winter project. However, I got engaged during the summer, and have the double expense of a wedding and buying a house in the spring, so gear had to wait.

Last year was a different story. I bought three Jacksons: KV2 USA (new), RR2 USA (NOS) and JDX-94 Concept (used). I picked up a used Peavey Classic 50 VT 4x10 combo and some rack effects. I also spent a considerable amount of cash on studio time, recording my band's demo.

Re: Were you a gear whore this year?

This year I was not bad, aside from the usually puchases (strings, picks, cables) I did get a Floyd Rose bridge by Mighty Mite off ebay, Johnson J-Station and a V-Amp.

Its impossible to keep track of the stuff I buy just to resell. Here is what I did with the Jacksons this year:

Re: Were you a gear whore this year?

Bought most of my guitars last year. Hmm, what did I get this year? I bought a '95 Hamer Special FM from Pete (Twisteramps), got a set of chrome EMG 25th anniversary 81s pups off ebay to put into it when I tired of the JB/59 combo after a few months. Traded my Professional Kelly XLR for an Ibanez RG7620 7-string. Traded my Charvel Model 6 to Doc for his Model 5A. Traded Jgcable a my Carvin DC400 for his Carvin DC120 12-string. Got some cymbals and other drum stuff, guitar cables, the usual strings, picks, a Boss TU-2 tuner pedal. Also bought a new amp (Mesa F-30 off ebay a month or so ago. Got an old black Jackson H/S/S body that's going to be refinned and a 24-fret Carvin neck added to it with all new hardware and DiMarzios, non-recessed Original Floyd. That's all I can think of for this year.

Oh yeah, I just thought of one more guitar. I bought another string-thru Dinky HX off board member Grandpa who found it in a pawnshop in Oklahoma. Where'd he disappear to anyway?

If it was me, I did list the Jem on the bay but it didn't hit my reserve. A dude contacted me and we worked a deal for it. I only sold it because I had bought all of those Soloists and would probably never had played the Jem again. No comparison in my book. I do have an SRV Start which I'd probably never sell. Its just the best sounding and playing Strat I've ever had my hands on. I used to use it for drop D stuff. It's back up to standard tuning a half step down and I use a Washburn Nuno N4 for drop D until I get one of my Soloists setup for it. Then again, if I happen to buy the Rhoads I'm wanting, I may use one of my RR's for downtuned stuff. Still have my Universe multi color for the really low stuff. Hope it was me you were asking the ???to. If not, I just made a fool of myself

I hate the bridge on my N4 btw..I'm going to have to replace it someday.

Cool to know about the Agile. I do not expect a 1000k guitar 'for the money' of 199.99. But, it would be nice if it was alot of bang for the buck. If it stys in tune, then it will be a bonus.

Steve - I got no bills and live with the folks - seems they're still not quite ready for "their baby boy" (youngest of 2) to leave the nest, so I use it to my gearwhoring advantage
