Re: Why Jackson/Charvel anyway???

Saw a Rhoads in a local music store years ago. It stuck out so much because it was certifiably ugly with a white paint job with some ugly bright color swirl graphic onthe front. I tried it anyway. The sales rep asked me why I was playing it on a shitty amp, and I told him that I owned a shitty amp, so I wanted to hear it on something closest to what I have so I could hear the guitar and not the amp. The sound was noticably better than the relatively mediocre guitars I played up to that point. I didn't buy it, but did grab the next one they got in, which was nice and black.
This was around 1990.

Re: Why Jackson/Charvel anyway???

I'd been looking for guitars I liked at local stores for years, but didn't find anything that really worked for me. Then one day I somehow fell ass-backwards into a job at Jackson. The only one I'd played up to that point was a DX1 a guy that lived across the street owned. Total shit. After a couple of months at Jackson I bought a KVX10. Then a Soloist. Then another V. Now I just bought a Charvel bass, I owned a Charvel Model 1 at one point... After having literally a few THOUSAND J/C's pass through my hands I'm still surprised at how consistant they are.

i bought my first charvel ( model 1b ) in the late 80's - early 90's ,not sure exactly as i had a lot of fun back then!i've been hooked ever since. most people here say j/c guitars rule but basses suck, well ( where's the middle finger gremlin when you need him)i love my basses and wouldn't play anything else. the playability and tone kick ass!( shut up bill! j/k)

Re: Why Jackson/Charvel anyway???

I first became aware of Charvel guitars from pictures of Ratt in magazines. Both Warren DeMartini and Juan Croucier played Charvel-branded guitars. When I was up in Connecticut visiting my mother, I went into a music store in Hartford, and they had a Charvel Model 3, brand new 1986 model, hanging on the wall for what seemed like a really low price considering this was the brand big-time bands like Ratt use (of course, I didn't know at the time that my Model 3 was not really the same as what the pros were using).

As time went on, I bought more Charvels a lot of the time because they were high quality instruments that looked good and had a very reasonable price. I would put one on layaway and could pay it off in three months at the most.

Of course, I lusted over the Jackson soloist the store where I bought my Charvels had hanging on the wall for several years, and I eventually convinced my Dad to buy me a custom shop Jackson for Christmas. So, I ended up with a really nice Jackson Strat-body that was just a dream of a player.

The interesting thing is that there was a time when I probably would've switched to Kramers (or at least bought one and tried it out) if they hadn't been so expensive. A Baretta (which was the only Kramer I was really interested in) was more than I could pay off in three months, so I never bought one. Had they been a little cheaper, I might have made the switch.

I did have a B.C. Rich Warlock for a time. Really nice Pearl white USA with gold hardware and neck-thru design. My parents had attempted to order me an NJ series Warlock for Christmas (a couple of years before I got the Jackson out of them), but the store never could get one in. My incredibly nasty step-mother called B.C. Rich and yelled at them for so long that they called me back the next day telling me they were sending me a USA neck-thru model to make up for the inconvenience.

As for why Jackson/Charvel now? A lot of it has to do with what I'm used to. I feel comfortable with a Charvel or a Jackson. And it is a tie to a time when I was more into music than I am now. It's funny how preferences and biases can persist even when not supported by any rational information. For example, I will buy '80s Model series guitars. I think they are great values right now. However, I absolutely refuse to purchase a toothpaste logo Charvel. I've never had one, and I probably never will. There's just something in me that can't stand those things, even though there are many models that are just as good (if not better) than the Model series.

But the toothpaste logos came at the end of my original Charvel days and that logo just doesn't seem "right" to me.

Not in my opinion, in my case, it was a brain trauma caused to me when I saw the first one in a music video when I was about 12 or 13 years old. Simple.

The Model's are my favorites. Even when they cost ALOT more.

The only reason I got my fusion was the price $150.

For me it was my MoM & my Uncles fault, my Mom being a single parent didn't have anybody to watch me when I was 11 so she took me to this concert she bought tickets for her younger brother my Uncle.
It was Ozzy 1982 There was this guy with 2 of the most incredable guitars I had ever seen. 1 had polka dots on it the other was a kinda off white.
That Guy played like nothing at the young age of 11 I had ever heard. I was really into Van Hallen at the time also. I have an older brother who listen to them every day LoL.
Wish I still had that damn ticket to.
In short it was Randy Rhoads.

Um thats Van Halen. (one L not two)
Anyway. For me it was walking into my favorite music store which at the time ws the largest volume Jackson dealer in the midwest. I was kinda looking at a G&L Legacy and the sales guy says "Hey you wanna see something cool? Check this out" He hands me this oliptical profiled guitar with the best neck I've ever put my hands on. And form that moment on I was stricken with the disease. The disease of Jacksonicus Gottahavitous. The guitar is still my favorite Jackson as it was my first and what I compare every other guitar I buy too. This guitar is my '92 Stealth Pro. Awsome neck. I've brought the guitar to work a few times and each time someone I work with says "man that is sweet, I love the neck, Thats the first Jackson I've liked" Its a friggin amaising guitar. If you dont have one stop what your douing nopw and go get one. well try to anyway. HAH
