<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes I have short hair. I am a consultant, and I sorta have to maintain a respectable look. I haven't had long hair since 1995. Besides, having long hair doesn't make you metal. I know plenty of guys that have long hair, and are complete asswipes. On the other hand, Kerry King has no hair. Are you saying he isn't metal?

As for the baggy pants, I think some of my pants are "relaxed fit", but I wouldn't call them baggy by any means. I don't have a wallet chain either. You're barking up the wrong tree dude, I'm 32 years old, and grew up on Kiss, Iron Maiden & Sabbath. I was the biggest thrasher ever in high school and was listening to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Flotsam, etc. before most people had heard of them. I will always be a metalhead, but I have very eclectic tastes, and listen to all kinds of music (except country )

Regardless of the music I listen to, if I still walked around in tight jeans, Converse high-tops, and a Slayer concert shirt at my age, I certainly wouldn't be where I am today. I'd probably be working at a gas station!

        I'll take a stab, Nu-metal is:

        a) Detuned crap music with 13 guage strings and a sprinkling of rap.

        b) What most so called "Metal" radio stations play all the time these days.

        c) keeping Guitar Center packed full of fresh idoits to rip off.

        d) all of the above.

No offence to all you guys who like to tune down, but for some reason, I just can't get into it.

BTW Dreamland_Rebel, Slayer may have run out of ideas for GOOD songs, but they are still fukin Slayer if you see them live! Re: Define...

Nu metal is the hybrid of heavy metal with alternative. It sprang directly from the loins of Soundgarden. Downtuned jugjugjugjug riffing with sporadic bursts of amelodic solos. Soundgarden was an original. They took the sludge of bands like the Melvins and Eyehategod and fused it with melodic voc als to create their sound. What we have now is that sound taken to the logical extreme. Three chords, tuned to the key of ass, with pasteurized, processed, vocal byproducts. There are a couple of good bands that fall within the nu metal genre, but they're few and far between.

I'll take a stab, hair metal is:

          a) Detuned crap music with 8 guage strings and a sprinkling of meedley.

          b) What most so called "Metal" radio stations play all the time these days.

          c) keeping Guitar Center packed full of fresh idoits to rip off.

          d) all of the above.

            Re: Define...

Nu-Metal is now, what Glam and Hair Metal was in the 80's.

Nu-Metal is music that has heavy elements in it, is designed with simple melody and low complexity, (not necessarily because there is no talent, but so the casual listener can get into it without thinking about it much), is geared towards the Commercial Radio market, and is heavily, even satyrically loaded with "image" and "style".

Bands like Soilwork's new album, new In-Flames, and Evanescence are bands that actually have some complextiy, and there are bands like Stained, Korn, and Linkin Park that are relatively simple.

Regardless of the music complexity, there must be SOME talent that these bands possess, otherwise, after selling millions of cds, if they can't promote their tunes on the road, they'll go nowhere.

It does take a lot out of anyone to tour so much and to perform every night... not everyone can do that or deal with the stress.

            I particularly dislike nu-metal, personally.

                Re: Define...

I hate the term "hair band"!

It's such crap, the length of your hair has NOTHING to do with the music you play. Mtv and the record industry made that term up to try and make us forget what a good musician was. While there are some exceptions to this it remains a fact nonetheless. Just like when they threw all the spotlight on Nirvana when it was groups like Mudhoney that really pioneered the grunge sound long before them. It's about the money and nothing else. Not that grunge was any good either.

Yes the far too few bands that survived the 90's are sounding like nu-metal, they want to keep their jobs so they do what they must. Today's youth gets programmed (yes I said it) to buy whatever garbage the industry throws at them, watch Nick and Disney with your kids and you'll see for yourself. It's really sad to con a 3 year old.

It's not the lack of solos that make this music almost unlistenable, as a guitarist I prefer a solo but that's not what bothers me. It's the lack of good arrangements, MELODY, HARMONY, vocal ability, writing skill, musical skill and only way I can tell it's the next song is the 2 second pause in the noise.

When I was growing up you had to have serious TALENT to even play in a cover band, now if you can tune to B and play 3-4 chords you are world class in the eyes of US labels. Also what's up with this having to act/dress like you're an African American? Really! If I was an African American I'd be insulted to call myself one, not only that but do they realize they're helping to promote rap (sorry, that's not music either IMO)?

And don't even get me started on rap!

The great African American blues and rock n' roll guitarists who really pushed the electric guitar into the mainstream are also disgraced to call themselves African Americans too? Not really, I don't think...

                    Re: Define...

Hmm, maybe I'm getting confused hear about what is considered nu-metal. I was under the impression that System of a Down, Mudvayne, and Disturbed were supposed to be nu-metal. These guys don't wear 2 shirts, at least not that I've noticed. I've seen a lot of kids that dress like that, but I normally don't pay much attention to them anyway. I actually thought they listened to this new "punk" stuff. They also always have that ghey wallet chain thingy. But hey, to each their own. Who am I to put down what someone else thinks is cool?

Honestly, I really like S.O.A D. I think they are very original and have some really catchy stuff. Same with Mudvayne and Disturbed. I'm pretty sure their songs aren't "party, party, party", and "fuck you" either.

Sephiroth, how can you say that "most" music is better? Look at all the garbage out there. Pop music in general, country music, most rap/R & B, this new punk stuff, etc. Can you honestly say you would rather listen to that stuff than nu-metal?

One more thing. What are these beanies you speak of Newc? Do you mean toques? Like a knit woolen hat kinda thing? I have one that is black with the C.O.C. logo on it. I got it back in 94, or 95 when C.O.C opened for Megadeth on the Youthanasia tour. I didn't realize that it was an uncool nu-metal thing. I'll stop wearing it post haste.

P.S. Someone had better tell Kerry King to stop wearing his too.

gay and fag are too different things in my book. Rob likes to suck dick and thats cool with me. cause he still wears the leather and studs and screams at the top of his lungs instead of jumping up and down going. "yeah, word yo, i'm a badass, yeah"

i just hope the new studio album doesn't come out nu-metal and gay!
