"Nu-Metal". I had not heard that term until I started posting on this board. Shows you how long I've been out of the loop.

Re: Define...
Nu metal: played by a bunch of hacks so incompetent they need to wear earphones for their live sets so they can listen to their own music because they lack rhythm, timing, and key; some of the most basic elements in music and learned every day by elementary school children in band class and music school. 99% of the songs will have the following structure: soft part--heavy part--soft part--heavy part--end. Lyrics will often b*tch about how evil society is and how "the man" is out to oppress the down-trodden, all the while playing a $3000 custom PRS or ESP and having visions of murdering any fan who dares to P2P their music instead of buying it.

Re: Define...
nu-metal = rap metal, metalcore, jump up and down metal, atitude metal.
"i'm rough and tough, watch me jump up and down, yo"
basically, all the "heavy" bands that replaced good song writing and musicianship with a bad-ass attitude, or stupid masks, and traded there denim and leather for hip hop gear and ebonics.
it just makes me so mad that "heavy metal" in todays society is referenced to having hip hop influences. that just makes me sick! heavy metal should be denim, leather, and spandex! with a feeling that makes you want to put your fist in the air! it shouldn't make white kids want to act black and wear baggy pants and say "word, yo". that shit is gay!

Yup. See also "Gnu-Metal", because it's Wildebeast shit (similar to bullshit, but worse)
It's the WIC-child of Rap, Grunge, and bad Thrash

Wildebeast shit! Ha, good one, Newc! You guys forgot to add the baggy pants, short hair, skull cap wearing wannabe to the definition."Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."

Re: Define...
I'd say "nu metal" is a very wide genre that includes a lot of very different bands. It's typically a fusion of metal and other styles, such as hip hop, punk, pop and hardcore. It's not necessarilly bad, but many of the bands aren't held in very high regard around here - mostly because we see them as posers, sellouts or musically lacking.
There are bands who do this stuff well though. I personally don't like the typical nu metal sounds and songs - but as much as I hate to admit it, both Slayer and In Flames have drifted off in nu metal directions lately, and they're both skilled, experienced bands that are held in high regard by the oldschool metalheads.

You know what, I'm really surprised at some of you who I thought were a little more mature. I'm not going to name names, but come on guys, all I hear is: nu-metal sucks, they're a bunch of no-talent hacks. Guys, it's music, and it doesn't have to be complicated to play, or a million notes a minute to be good. Personally, I like a lot of tunes I have heard from bands that are tagged nu-metal. Who gives a flying fuck what it's pigeonholed as. Let's face it, if technical ability is the deciding factor, then I guess Black Sabbath's first 4 albums couldn't be called metal either.
Don't get me wrong, I feel exactly the same way about the new "punk" stuff. I don't consider it real punk, but hey, people like it, and I have to admit that as annoying and juvenile as it is, some of it is pretty damn catchy.
I'm not saying you guys have to like it, but jumping on the bandwagon and ragging on it just makes you look silly. Nya nya, my music is better than yours.
Instead of ragging on it, let's just concentrate on talking about how great metal is. And when I say metal, I mean fucking METAL!!!

Re: Define...
I don't bag on them because they have no technical ability - hell I can't identify what mode my solos are in; all I know for sure is Pentatonic and one Mixolydian scale (at least I think it's Mixolydian - I truly don't obsess about it). I bag on them because I cannot stand bands that put on an act of "attitude". Face it, talent will never be replaced by a smug "in yo face, biyatch" appearance.
And them damn beanies, wearing 2 shirts, and those baggy pants!? WTF is this damn welfare "image"!? I don't wanna see the top of your boxers any more than I want to see your dick. Pull up your pants, learn to sing, and pick a damn shirt to wear.
Some assclown wrote in to Guitar World (or one of them) saying how he was "real metal: I wear two shirts" and some other dumb shit. I mean, you wear TWO shirts all year long at the same time? Lemme guess, the typical dumbass look of one longsleeve t-shirt under a shortsleeve t-shirt?
I am sorry, but if it was dead fucking winter, I can see it, but if it's not freezing cold outside, you look like a complete fucking idiot. Yeah I used to wear a flannel shirt over a t-shirt, but the flannel shirt was never buttoned (unless it got damn cold). Yeah it was "fashionable" but it was a damn-sight more stylish than dressing like these morons do.
And I can write a catchy song - doesn't mean it's good, it's just catchy.
The Oscar Meyer song is catchy, as are a lot of jingles designed to sell you something. I want Rock Music to say something worth hearing. That's where all the hair metal bands went wrong - they weren't saying anything. It doesn't have to be something political or profound, but it has to make sense beyond "party party party" or "fuck you".
