• Custom inlay ideas?

Looking for some cool and/or original custom inlay shape ideas, beyond what's already shown on J/C's web site and listed in their literature as an option.

...Anyone? ...Anyone? Pics would help, too. Thanks.

Re: Custom inlay ideas?

I've got a couple that are based on body graphics - bombs for Camo/Military finishes, Nuclear symbols, I thought about getting a Warlock with a Halo 'Master Chief' graphic (XBox game) and doing the name Halo on the first 4 frets like the Mick 7 'HATE' Warlock

That spiderweb inlay decal on that Spider-Man Ibanez on Ebay was kinda neat too, though the baby blue and red color scheme was ghey

Don't know if this was ever done, but I had the idea a long time and was saving it. Evolution. You know, the monkey to man silouettes.

Sun and moon inlays, alternating each time with the different phases for each moon. And the 12th fret would have one of each. For the sun, thought I'd do something similar to what's in the Dimarzio logo.

Although I would never want it on my guitar, the evolution idea is awesome! Anything that occurs through a cycle is cool, like the moon one. Brian Moore has a shop on one of their custom pages with a moon/mountain thing, I thought that was cool, but then you would never be touching wood while playing. IMO, the inlay can't be huge because I really don't like the feeling of inlays after playing my PCs. Anyone else not like the feel?

I want to think of a cool idea then post it...give me time, this is hard.

Tommy, yeah, the VH deathstar ruled. Sorry you sold her. EVH will always be the man, but I'd prefer to not do anyone's logo, ya know? Besides, I'd heard that J/C won't do anything that's trademarked now. Same goes for graphics.

Potleafs are cool, too, but were done recently. The SJR dude's RR, I think. (IMHO, they would've even looked cooler in abalone, though.)

For your consideration:
how about the outline of your favorite states?
or how about the danzig skull and horns?
How about a a mini skeleton in different poses?
Have you considered the outline of a 1968 firebird?

-Sponge Bob
-Flowers
-Monster Trucks
-The Ghostbusters logo (this one would actually dominate, but you would have to have slimer airbrushed on the guitar)
-The obelisk from Led Zeppelin
-The zeppelin from Led Zeppelin
-ZOSO and all the member's different symbols
-Andy Warhol's velvet underground banana

HOLY SHIT!!! I was thinking of having a custom death warrior with the raiders logo and this at the 12th fret.I also wanted it to say raiders from the 10th fret to the 2nd fret!!

SO, does that mean Jackson won't do the Raiders logo for me?

James Hetfield had a sort of evolution inlay on one or two of his guitars... the man to wolf thing.
He should now get penis inlays that change from flaccid to hard.

Re: Custom inlay ideas?

This is more than just an inlay idea; this is the plan for my first (future) custom shop Soloist. I plan on ordering this for my 40th b-day in March of 2005. Inlays are just a small part of the overall theme.

Specs for the HuntinDoug Soloist Custom:

Soloist
Mah neck thru
22 fret Bound ebony
Mah body, Maple top,
String Thru TOM (black hardware)
One Humbucker (EMG 81)
1 vol, 1 tone, on/off toggle

Paint Scheme: Commercial camo pattern (realtree hardwoods) front & back. Not a cheesy 3 color brown/green/grey, but a highly detailed pattern showing lots of depth & shadow.

Inlays: Starting at the first fret, a MOP oak leaf in a close up position, actually only showing a portion of the leaf. The detail in the leaves will show veins in a green abalone. The inlays will start in the upper LH corner of the block. As you ascend up the fretboard, the leaf sways in the wind, as it seems to be falling down & away, creating an "edge on" perspective making the leaf thinner to accommodate the shorter fret block. By the 7th fret, the leaf will sway enough to show the underside in green abalone. At the 12th fret, 2 Acorns. Abalone cap with a MOP nut. The leaf continues to fall thru 15, 17,19 & 21. The whole idea is to show motion, and a perspective from high in a tree.

To bring this whole thing together, I plan on supplying my own nut material (sounds kind of sick if you say that the wrong way) . A Whitetail antler bone nut, with some of the slightly rough darker area still showing. The tuner keys will be cross sections of antler bone milled out just like a standard key (I already have them done).

The headstock Jackson logo will be abalone, with the custom shop logo, and HuntinDoug underneath (possibly). The idea is to create something that is unmistakably me. I have worked with 2 patent attorneys on other job related designs in the past. I already have a copyright on the leaf designs. And, they tell me when the time comes, they can contact Bill Jordan from Realtree to get the companies official OK for use of the hardwoods pattern. This is an idea I have had for 6 or 7 years now. Now I just gotta make it happen.
