• ahhhhhhhhh I can't find it

Ok I know this has been discussed here b4 although it may have been the old board. What are the 25th anniversary made for GC i believe worth?
A customer called and was asking about one he was given for money owed to him. He doesnt know anything about guitars so I got as much info as i could from him. H.s.s pups neck replaced with a lace sensor. :mad , it is blue in color with what he says black sparkels. But from what I've seen of these they are a swirl paint job. Bolt on neck with SD neck plate seriel #6832. Says he got it from this guy who bought it new in 90. paid 1200.00 for it supposedly. Schaller trem (jt590).
Engraved control cavity cover with 13 of 25 25th anniversary.
I know these are Ontario made with left over SD plates bit what is the value of these suckers.
He's gonna bring it in for me to look at tomorrow so any help asap would be great.
Thanks Guys
Gil

If you work at a music store and want to know what to pay for it for resale? $200-$250. It's worth maybe $450-$550 retail.

Re: ahhhhhhhhh I can\'t find it

I have to kinda cringe at the thought of a store clerk/dealer asking what a used guitar is worth, because I understand they'll try to pay the customer (especially one who doesn't know any better) as little as possible in order to make a higher profit on resale (assuming the store is going to buy it, and not the individual asking the question at the time).

Paying $250 for a USA Soloist is a great deal if it's bought by an individual, but if it's bought by a store, that's ripping the seller off IMO.

If the guy wants to sell it, tell him to put it on Ebay and get as much as possible for it.

Re: ahhhhhhhhh I can\'t find it

I said he was gonna briong it in for me to look at as far as its value. Not that he was gonna sell it to the store. Besides if he did sell it to the store I will be giving him as much as possable towards it. Honest; I don't do business that way. I've had it done to me and know what it feels like so I don;t do it to the customer. I know what things are generally worth in th eopen market for this area But this particular guitar is a bit unique and not of general knowledge except for those who have had experiance with them. Just because I work at a store and it happens to be a GC does that make me bad? Look at it like this; If i say for example give the guy 500 for it and tag it at oh 800 which with what was mentioned here would be to much for this guitar would it not? SO it sits and sits and gets dinged up and abused to the point where nobody even looks at it anymore and it gets marked down for clearance and sold two years later. No how would that make me feel? And what would the stores perspective of me be for my knowledge of Jackson/Charvels. It would make me look like an ass wouldnt it!! So im trying to right by both the customer and the store and finding out its actual street value if it has any at all. And telling him what that is and taking it from there. If I offer him something to low for his likeing hje doesnt have to sell the guitar to the store does he! IT's his guitar he can do what he wants to with it. Besides it's supposed to be payment from somebody else for moneys owed to him. So if it;s not worth what the other guy said it was ($3-6 grand) He's gonna probably give it back to it's original owner.
Anyway enough of the rant but sheesh Newc how does me working at a store change the value of something on the street?

Re: ahhhhhhhhh I can\'t find it

Are you a GC manager or a salesman whom the manager wants to get the info? There's a mighty big difference IMO between the two. And yes, I've seen store clerks and managers get those dollar signs in their eyes when someone who doesn't know any better brings in something to sell, and the guy behind the counter knows what it is and lowballs the guy.
Yes, if he was given the guitar in lieu of thousands of dollars, he's going to be quite upset when he finds out it's worth less than he loaned for it.

Now, as you said, if the guy just wants to bring it in for a price check, that's fine, but like I said, I've seen stores that see something they can turn a buck on and give the uninformed a low figure, hoping the guy will sell to the store. I've also seen clerks run deals behind the manager's back by buying them cheap, both for their personal collections as well as to resell on Ebay.
That's one of the things that keeps me out of the local shop.

And there's no need for a rant - at the end of the day we're all just anonymous people on the internet. I say I'm a good guy, you say you're a good guy, but who here really knows either of us well enough in real life to back us up, and how well does anyone else know those who would back us up?

I disagree Newc.....if some shlep stepped up to me with a with a Strat head Charvel ( and it has happened)....and asked a ridiculous low amount for it ( and he did )......he is SOL ( which he found out a couple of years later that he screwed himself over harder on the deal than he has EVER screwed someone that bought one of his guitars).

Re: ahhhhhhhhh I can\'t find it

Thats how I got my SD Strat head. A guy had it anad just wanted to dump it for whatever he could. It not still being all original (added Kahler) He got 150.00 bucks for it at MGR after I left. Then a friend of mine tells me about it and I go get it for a stupid price. The store is not out alot of money for something that they paid too much for and I got a killer deal on a '82 Strat Head. Everything has an inherant value and it's sentimental value. Yes we all are guilty of having a sentamental value on things and want more for them than they are worth. Or it would take alot more than it's worth to sell off or trade. Than there's the actual street value of things. We know what these are for the most part and would like to get every penny of it's value in exchange for it. We also know this isn't always the case though. It's human nature to put a sentimental value on things and over judge its actual value because of this trait we all have.
I've been screwed when selling gear when I didn't know any better. ALot of our customers really don't know but you show them the book and rationalize with them and they understand things better and make the decision on thier own with the knowledge they have learned. If they then decide to sell the piece to the store it's thier decision not the stores'. Alot of times they do walk and keep the piece and we do suggest Ebay but sometimes they just need the cash or what they're trading for. IT's that simple.

I still contend, that a bolt on Ontario Guitar Center Limited is worth $250 to purchase and $450-$550 to sell, for a business. Maybe $350-$400 in trade value.

Those are fair prices I think.
