• emg 81 running at 18 volts?

has anyone tried connecting another 9 volt in a series-aiding configuration so the emg runs at 18 volts instead of 9? I hear it adds more headroom?

Is the search function or the tech section broken?

my SL1 (81/SA/SA) is running at 18V; I'll echo what everyone else has been saying, it opens them up, makes 'em a bit crisper and more alive.

Xeno, I have also found the 85 to more brutal than the 81 in the bridge, especially for palm muting!! I run mine at 9 volts, but I may have to experiment Jack.

i agree 85 in the bridge is a little thicker sounding....

yes, Thicker is a perfect word for it!! You only give up a little Highs on the 85, but get so much more depth and I also beleive it has something to do with the 81 having Ceramic Magnets and the 85 having Alnico Magnets. I haven`t found too many pickups I like with Ceramic magnets, I meen they scream, but you loose so much lows and low/mids. Jack.

kind of shrill and almost sterile sounded i think.....i love the sound though. it also depends on what kind of wood your guitar is made of.
