Re: So I got my new Schaller Floyd...

Lee Garver got back to me and said they have the blocks in stock for $20 plus $5 shipping. Seems high to me. I know where a place sells the longer blocks for $10. Interesting. Lee does have a better selection though. He has the 37mm, 32mm and 42mm. I need to decide if I need the 37 or 32. Time to measure.

It`s a bit like over here in England, I can get 42mm Blocks for £6.95 but the 32mm, bearing in mind they have less metal, retails at £16.50!!!!!!
There`s something wrong somewhere!!!

This is totally speculation on my part, but I would guess that because most Floyd equipped guitars are recessed these days, the sellers or manufactures have chosen to up the price on those to make a bigger profit. If this is the case it seems to go against the "supply and demand curve", unless the shorter sustain blocks are in short supply due to a high demand.

True Hamner. They probably have a surplus of old stock long blocks, and are trying desperately to be rid of them. Personally, I would refrain from spending any more money, and simply cut the old block and redrill it myself. Of course, that might not be so easy if you don't have access to a machine shop. A Sustain Block was made by Hamer USA and was their hardtail bridges in the 70s and into the 80s on their guitars. They were made out of very heavy brass, ;eading to a very sweet sustain on the guitars. Very sweet bridge, but expensive to produce. Jack.

Re: So I got my new Schaller Floyd...

Allright, I thought I'd just let you know how I, my guitar and the Schaller is doing. I had my first long playing session (after the bridge swap) with it tonight and I must say I love this bridge. I never thought it would make such a big difference (and I'm sure it may be mostly in my head), but somehow the guitar is more of a joy to play now. The bridge has a nice and "solid" feel, which I can't say about the JT580LP.

Almost immediately I noticed a dramatic improvment in my technique, as if I'd gotten a lot less sloppy (although neglecting practice for over 2 months). I can't really understand why, but in the past I've noticed that the JT580 had some sideways slack in the saddles - they would wiggle side to side a tiny amount when under pressure. I never thought much about it before, but the Schaller doesn't do this at all, making me suspect that half of my "sloppiness" was due to the strings never being in the exact same places twice on the JT580LP. On the other hand, it could just be that I was unusually relaxed and inspired tonight.

I've already mentioned the great feel in the finetuners. The other big differences I've noticed with the Schaller, as opposed to the JT580POS, are:

1) The trem arm mounts further back on the baseplate, preventing me from hitting it with my palm or pinky every now and then. YAY!!! (I always hated that)

2) I found that I could adjust the tension in the trem arm a lot more accurately, so I can just tap it with my hand and have it swing out of the way for when I don't use it. (Very nice when you've been used to a trem arm that is so stiff it produces warbly notes when you try to move it.)

3) I can actually get more nuances from my palm-muting now. With the JT580 I'd have trouble finding a nice "sweet spot" for fast, semi-muted licks on the treble strings. This is much easier with the Schaller - for some reason. It doesn't measure up to a tunamatic in this regard, but it still feels like I've suddenly gotten a lot more playability out of the guitar.

There's just one little nuisance I have with it now: The G string tends to go out of whack a little bit after some dive bombings, but I have yet to figure out if it's due to the bridge or if the locking nut is slipping on that string.

All in all, I'm damn happy I pulled the trigger on this trem! My guitar is a better guitar now.

Excellent dude! (How Bill & Ted!)

They are a great trem, no doubt about it. You can retrofit the arm with the screw in collar onto most other trems too for that superior German feel if you want, but the entire trem is a delight, along with the also Schaller made OFR.

Which guitar did you put it in btw? Pics?
