Re: New EVH Charvels

Is Eddie still big enough to anchor a guitar line?

Through conversations I've had with people on the inside, I'm under the impression that Charvel isn't intended to be brought to the masses. Instead, it's going to be the "ultimate hot rodded guitar". Which leads me to believe it's going to be pricey and hand made. So, if FMIC is writing Eddie a large check for him to sign on with them, how do they intend to recoup the money they're paying him? It certainly won't come from sales, unless they sell an absolute ton of guitars specifically because Eddie is playing Charvel. If that's going to happen they're going to have to bring a guitar to market that is affordable and appeals to players of different levels, at several price points. A Korean built Charvel that's affordable doesn't really fit in with the "ultimate hot rodded guitar" scenario. If the next VH record is absolutely huge and if kids start talking about Eddie again (instead of people 30+) it could be worth having him on board. If not though, will guys like us buy enough Charvels to warrant the cost of his endorsement?

Maybe Eddie's check is coming from the sale of the Art Series guitars? At $5K a piece he could walk away with a large sum if he gets 100% of the sales. That doesn't seem feasible though... and what happens after that? Artists like him get a big check every year to continue the relationship.

    Eh, who knows...

I agree with YAO. This is brilliant. EVH remains hugely significant. From a marketing standpoint, even non-guitarists know of Van Halen (though some think that David Lee Roth is Van Halen, and his first name is "Van") As a guitarist, EVH's significance is unquestionable. While his most ground-breaking work was done years ago, no one has since appeared to take rock guitar to the next level.

I suspect (and hope) that FMIC's long-term goal is to produce EVH guitars for the regular guitar-buying public. But before that happens, this limited edition will provide tons of free advertising, let FMIC test the waters of public interest, and make lots of money through the sale of these guitars. And the halo effect that this EVH association will provide for Charvel, just as the company is reborn under FMIC's wing, is priceless. This is a win-win situation for all involved. I love it.

actually i think it's agreat idea...more stratheads ...hopefully the beginning of great things...now everyone that's in a band and on this board needs to be taking their stratheads out and playing live...the more people see them, the more they'll want them...d.m.

Yes and it probobly will raise the original strathead prices too. The only thing better than having a re-issue is the real deal. Most likely new blood will be brought into the vintage market during or after the sale of these. I can't wait to see how the first one does. A couple of thoughts were that the blk/white and the red/white were never really Charvels. Wonder if the y/b's will command more $$. I'll bet Wayne is kicking himself in the ass yet another time

                Re: New EVH Charvels

I sent an e-mail to their "contact us" addy to ask when the auctions would start. (...Not that I'll actually bid at those prices. ) The e-mail bounced, as if it were a non-existent account.

I suppose it might've been a problem with my ISP, though, as e-mails have occassionally gone screwy on me lately.

                  Re: New EVH Charvels

I wonder if the out-of-the-norm structure of this promotion has something to do with Eddie's contract with Peavey? Until his Peavey contract is up, he may be severely limited in what he can actually do as an endorsement for other guitar brands. This whole scheme may have been designed just to skate around the Peavey contract. Hopefully when the Peavey contract expires, Charvel and EVH can do a full blown deal. I suspect the best is yet to come!

You nailed it bro! Brilliant, but also a bit..well "KISSesque". Just a hint of "anything for a buck" (on Ed's part anyway). Personally, I would rather see him make music, and let someone else stripe the guitars. It's exciting to think that a single hum Charvel with an OFR may be in the works soon. I'd like to see something with a nice quilt top...Simple yet stunning. Wishful thinking on my part I guess.

They added a couple of killer photos of EVH playing a B&Y live! (You can even see the headstock and logo this time. )

You can order the new USA Standard model that way. The one I ordered is a single hum (Duncan Distortion), Floyd Rose, and a maple fretboard.

                          Re: New EVH Charvels

This is DEFINITELY a good thing. I don't care much about EVH, or the way he treated other builders when he issued cease and desist letters... BUT...

EVH will always be a big name, and this just goes to show that FMIC doesn't have their heads up their asses, rather that they're very clever.

There will NOT be a regular production of an EVH series guitar. This is designed to make some money for Ed, and to create a big stir for the Charvel name once again. They will accomplish this, especially since VH is on tour and has a new album. Great timing on both EVH and FMIC.

This is a dream guitar for the collector or EVH fan. His original brand, with graphics done by him (at least partially). Don't expect them to diminish the value of these by providing a production line.

                          At least imo...
