• Jackson neckthrough neck heel question

    Alright, compare this:

    to this:

I haven't played the first type of neck heel, but it looks more "scooped" or "scalloped" with better upper fret access.

So here's my question. Are there specific names for these two types of neck heels, and what are they?

Thanks! It would be great if all Jacksons had this "heelless neckthough body joint", but I'm not complaining.

I see 3 types of neck joints here: the Silver Bullet guitar (angled cut), the black guitar (lump cut), and the black/natural pair of guitars (C cut).

Which is the "heelless neck thru body joint" you refer to? Also, I don't see it on the on-line Custom Shop quote form. The closest I see is a mention of "scalloped heel" under "Body Options."

This is important to me because I want to order a Custom Shop with the maximum scalloped joint, like my SL4s have (the natural & black pair). The Silver Bullet's joint is similar but not as radical, with its angled cut, instead of the deep "C-shaped" cut.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

In the mid 80's the neck heel joint was similar to the black one shown in NOTP's post. This remained in effect, for the most part, until about late 1989, when they began using the "scooped" joint like the black one in quicksilver's post. By 1993 or so, they began to use the neck more like the "Silver Bullet" graphic Soloist, and that joint is in use today. What year is that Silver Bullet, a '93? And in the earliest days of the Soloist, many of the necks were set in and only had 22 frets.

Re: Jackson neckthrough neck heel question

Having owned Soloists with both the big and scalloped heels, I can assure you neither one is better for upper fret access than the other, if that's your concern.
Though the scalloped heel is standard construction, which may reduce (or at least not increase) the Custom Shop price.

The Silver Bullet one is 1992, according to the JCF Gallery. The black one I posted is my 1998 Shannon Soloist. I assume that since the Shannons were made to feel like mid-1980s Soloists, they incorporate the same neck heel. Cool!

Hmmm, but the scooped ones seem like you can put your thumb even further up the neck for what I assume is better fret access. I haven't played these scooped ones, so that's why I was sort of wondering about them and how they measure up. If the scalloped heel is standard, then I'm not complaining! Oh, I don't really have problems reaching the high frets... just that anything that makes upper fret access just a little bit better can't be anything except beneficial.

It really doesn't make the upper frets any easier to access really. It makes the access feel different, but doesn't make it any easier. I've played both styles, and it doesn't really make any noticable difference.

I contend it just looks nicer.

The heel on my SL1 is somewhere in between the first 2 (the silver and the black).
                          It looks like this.

Look again! The silver one goes straight across and the black one curves up slightly at the heel. I know it’s hard to tell in the pic but its there. You can see it if you look.
