Re: Help me find a Jackson please!!!

Ibenhad uses a different pivot post spacing than everyone else (or at least different than Floyd Rose, the international locking tremolo standard which Ibenhad flagrantly disregards), so replacing it with a better trem was out of the question.

Some dealers will include the hard case with a DK-2 or at least won't rip you as bad as some others (avoid Musician's Friend - they are the catalog sales division of Guitar Center, and they suck)

If all else fails, you can get a good used case cheaply from Ebay.

As for breaking stuff, once you get it you'll see what's what and how everything works. About the only way you can break it is if you drop it on the head or slam it against a wall, but that's true for every guitar.

Rule #1: Play around with it - if it moves, move it. If it's a switch, switch it. If it's a knob, turn it. If it's a button, push it. If it sounds like it's breaking, stop it

Re: Help me find a Jackson please!!!

Fragger, if it's your first decent guitar, you may initially find the tremolo unit a bit of a hassle to maintain. With a fixed bridge guitar, you just string it up, stretch the strings, tune it and you're ready to rock. Not so with a Floyd.

When you change strings, you'll have to figure out how to unlock the string clamp while making sure the little block in the saddle doesn't pop out and get lost under the sofa (or some such thing). Then as you tune one string up, the bridge will pull up and all the other strings will drop in pitch. It's a pain in the neck the first time you do it (took me over half an hour the first time). With some practice you will be much faster though. Just make sure NOT to overtighten any of the screws - they can strip very easilly.

For any other advice about tremolo maintainence, look around in the Q&A forum here at JCF.

I also agree with Newc: Once it is strung up and locked down, play the hell out of it! Remember that guitars are meant to be played, and that it can be fixed if you break something. Make sure you have fun playing your guitar. That's the most important thing - to have a good time with it.

Oh - one more thing: If you decide to change the string height by adjusting the pivot poles, don't do it while the guitar is strung up. This is contrary to what many say, but I've ruined a JT580 LP bridge (the same type that is in the DK2) by doing this. The JT580LP is built out of pretty cheap metal, so adjusting it under pressure can make the knife edges on the baseplate dull - which in turn will make it go out of tune more easilly.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">How did you ruin a bridge by adjusting the height under tension. It's going to get a lot more friction every time you dive than it it will with a turn of the screws.

So I think I should save up for the DK2, it comes with a hardcase too, right? [/QB]
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Nope, the imports don't come with cases. The USA models do. And watch out for mail order companies like Musician's Friend who feel the need to charge you for a case for a USA model.

There are 2 Lefty DK2s up on ebay. This guy is a good seller. I've delt with him before and he is now a Jackson dealer. Plus he is left handed.

He's got a black one. I would say that would be the perfect metal color

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah I have been noticing those for days. Just wondering if that is a reasonable price for a DK2. Seriously, I don't mean it sarcastically, I really have no idea of its fair price, perhaps you guys could.

I thank the rest of you as well for helping me, especially for telling me a bit about the DK2 bridges. Thanks!

I thank you too Ron, just as I do to everyone else who posted here. I'm sorry if I'm making you guys go in circles here, but as Brian said, my finance and lack of knowledge is making me ask so many questions.

As for the Ibanez's, Brian, do you consider the RG1570 a lower-level guitar? It retails for $6XX. Do you think it compares to the DK2? Also, the reason why Ibanez sucking is not sitting well with me is the fact that so many of my influences have Ibanez signatures and stuff. Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, and even Joe Satriani. Aren't these guys good guitarists? I'm sure they could have played ANY guitar they wanted, why the Ibanez? BTW, the Paul Gilbert Ibanez retails pretty close to the RG1570. I would have considered that too, but they don't come in leftys. Once again, thank you all for the help! I really appreciate it!
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The new RG1570 is just the old 570 with hardware upgrades, I believe. The main problem I have with these lower model Ibanez's is the neck. It feels like poop and is totally unplayable, a little too thin too. If you want to get an Ibanez, make sure it has the Prestige neck, not the Wizard II. But, you will be so much happier with the DK2!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I was talking to the owner of my local Jackson dealer just last week about USA's coming with cases. He stated for 2004, that Jackson didn't price guitars with cases. He said this might be the reason for the prices not jumping up so much.
Has anyone else heard this? My philosphy is, if you spend more than a grand for a guitar, it should come with a case!

No cases?!?!?! Talk about being ripped off. I would be pissed if I had to pay extra for a case, for a $1500 guitar.

Don't let Ibanez fool you there on the 1570. I think they are calling the neck the new "Wizard Prestige" just because they know most players think the Wizard II is crap. If you can find an older RG with the original wizard neck, those are pretty decent. Let me stress again, the neck on DK2's is very good. Okay, I'll admit I'm biased when it comes to Jackson guitars. But, it is for a very good reason. They are FAR superior to Ibanez, ESP, BCRich, etc.

Just fear that if I post something similar on the Ibanez forums, I would get replies in favor of the Ibanez. If I post this on a neutral forum, I wouldn't get many posts. However, I just get a better vibe from Jackson's side, so I think I will start saving now. Thanks all for a great help. If you guys do find a good lefty deal in your local stores/Internet, please PM me, so I can contact the store, and see if they can ship the guitar for me. Please also include the other leftys by Jackson included in this thread. Thank you once again!
