Back when I was in college I used to take my Rhoads w/Rising Sun graphic to my jazz band class. It was hilarious to sit around playing jazz standards on that Rhoads with these old farts. Lots 'o funny looks.

Jackson actually makes guitars that are hollow and more pointed towards non-metal styles. Still, that said, it's the player that determines the music coming out of an instrument. True, some guitar designs are more suited to certain tones than others but it still comes back to the player. Hand Pat Metheny a Jackson and I don't think he'll automatically lose his jazz roots.

For what it's worth, I've actually used my snakeskin Jackson in a church praise band setting and used nothing but clean tones. [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

Also, what does the Tone Zone and Air Norton sound like together combined??? Lately, I've been wondering whether I should get the TZ/AN combo, or something else that can play metal and other genres of music??? If you got to the Seymour Duncan website, you can get a CD set that has tonal examples of every pickup they make...same guitar playing the same riff each time, just with a different p/u...an interesting listen, believe it or not! [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

Getting the SD demo CD would be a good start. Plus, you should peruse the DiMarzio and SD websites. They have some sound clips up. Plus, they try to describe the tonal characteristics of their pickups.

But it's really hard to judge what a particular pickup will sound until you have it in your guitar, playing through your equipment. One good thing is that DiMarzio and I believe Duncan have return/exchange programs if you don't like a particular pickup.

One last thought is to write or call the pickup manufacturers and ask them for advice on what to install in your guitar. I got advice on pickups for one of my Jacksons from no one less than Steve Blucher, the main design guy at DiMarzio. So try that route, too.

See, the major pickup companies should follow EMG's lead and offer a new line of "quick connect" pickups and stuff. It makes pickup changes a breeze since you just plug them in and swap them out until you find the best pickup.

There is something inherently metal about playing a Jackson. Every time I pick one up, my hands go right to the Damage Inc solo. Although, come to think of it, I did subconsciously play a riff from Angel of Death one time in the 90's... It's a strange phenomenon. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

That's also correct - playing polka (or jazz) WILL render your warrantee void. Sorry dude.

DiMarzios have a really modern sound, Seymour Duncans are more for recreating the sounds of yesteryear.

Where do you hear this? DiMarzio has the Virtual Vintage and PAFs as examples of vintage-style pickups. Duncan has the Invader, Dimebucker, and massive-output LiveWire series as examples of ultra-modern super-high-gain pickups.
