Re: which evh to order

I like the black and yellow first with brass trem, then the black and white. I think they should put the big headstock on the black and white one like Ed's was originally w/a vintage trem.

I also associate the R/W/B one with kramer, but if I wanted one it would still be the only choice for me

Re: which evh to order

I can definitely understand folks associating the red scheme with Kramer. But, IMHO, that was more perception than anything else. It was EVH's "signature" scheme during his days endorsing that company, and I suspect most people make that association because of this timing and the many Kramer-logo'd 5150s with the same paint scheme.

Nonetheless, as Hoss mentions, "Franky" predates his relationship with Kramer and has Charvel roots. One can certainly make a very strong argument that the later "Kramer" 5150s (...which weren't) were copies of the original , which was Charvel.

Not digging on Kramer, mind you. They had pretty cool stuff back then, too.

Oh, and one more thing. I believe Franky's body wood was ash. So screw EVH's own specs for the crapola b-ASS-wood. ...I want mine in ash, already!

You are correct about Frankenstein...it's ash. And if I recall correctly, it originally had wide (R5, baby) necks on it...dunno what's up with the whole b-ASS-wood/R2 dealio..if I do order one, it's gonna be ash!

Custom specs are not allowed. I was joking.

(...Although I really do wish they would reconsider the basswood body. Give me alder, ash, mahogany, whatever. I'd prefer almost anything else.)

What's so wrong with basswood? I've owned a USA Jackson Strat that was basswood, as is my Wolfgang Special. Both guitars have (had) great resonance.

B/W for me BTW...

Guitar manufacturers originallystarted using b-asswood (and poplar, also uck)to cut corners because it's cheap. Plus, it's not the most solid of woods...a buddy of mine ripped his Floyd completely out of the body (studs and all)doing a simple pull-up on it. Ash or Mahogany sound a hundred times better, trust me, I've got guitars made out of all of 'em...except the afforementioned evil b-asswood. Won't touch that.

It's cheapo. Soft. Does not take abuse well (dings and chips easily). Has the tonal resonance of a wet, juicy Sully fart. And I can almost hear the trem posts tilting over already.

This is purely opinion. Basswood gets a pretty bad rap for being cheap, but I don't get it. It is a quality tone wood, that might be less expensive due to supply. It is not cheap because of quality. If your buddy ripped his Floyd out of the guitar doing a simple pull up, it wasn't because of the basswood. I have had a few basswood guitars, and I like them as much as my mahogany, maple, alder and ash guitars. They are not inferior. It is just a personal choice. I have been collecting and playing for 25 yrs and the first time I really heard people bash basswood is on this forum.

Yep, it's my opinion...and everybody has a right to it . Seriously, to call basswood a 'quality tone wood'? Please. I've been building guitars for 20 years,(and I've sold quite a few in my music retail days) and as I said, it's the worst sounding wood I've encountered, and every real luthier (or collector, for that matter) I know agrees. It DOES all come down to personal preference, but there's a reason why the higher quality, more expensive guitars DO NOT use basswood. And my buddy DID rip his Floyd out because of the basswood---the wood around the studs GAVE OUT. What else would you blame it on, sun spots?!?!?

Re: which evh to order

I think this EVH production model with Basswood ,it dissapointed me a little because the White/Black Strat Eddie originally used was made out of a heavy Ash.
Then the Black/Yellow was Mahogany.
Red/White one is the same guitar as the White/Black he repainted over.
So again, it is a heavy Ash.
I am not bashing Basswood being cheap wood or anything.
It is just wrong wood material for these Charvel when we know Eddie used different wood for his early Charvels.

I understand that Musicman EVH have Basswood back, Peavey Wolfgangs have Basswood back or Specials have Basswood complete bodies but buying a Charvel Strat especially these EVHs are supposed to be recreations of what he used in the past,They could go with different wood.
Also Red/White with Charvel logo looks weird.
Even with the White/Black with Strat head too.The original one had large 70's Fender headstock instead.

In my opinion, Charvel/EVH just needed to stick with the Yellow/Black one only.

Actually basswoods tonal properties is said to sound more like old aged alder. I have some basswood guitars and they are fine. Sound great and plenty durable. It's just the way people equate cheap $ to cheap product. It isn't always true.
