i remember goin to that show in knoxville tn, my older brother took me, that was one of the moments in time that stand out to me. after seeing the concert on the way home i remember telling my brother i wanted to learn to play guitar.
a very sobering rememberance, and a very well done tribute thunder.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. The DJ first said that a member of Ozzy's band had been killed, but he was going to continue on with the tour. My first thought was that there was no way it was Randy, because there was no way they could replace him.
I remember this sad day too...it goes something like this:
I was a senior in HS. My shop class partner, Jeff W , was the ball boy for the Nets. He knew how much of a Rhoads fan I was and got us front row, dead center tickets to the Ozzy show at the Meadowlands.
Fast forward to about a week or two before the show. My friends are hanging out in the basement getting drunk. I walk in after work and a buddy says, "So, are you all psyched up for the Ozzy show?" I am like, "Fuck yeah". Then he says, "Randy Rhoads died in a plane crash". I was like, "Yeah right, here's another beer for ya, you're just jealous I got such kick ass seats."
He kept assuring me that the show was cancelled, but I thought he was busting my balls. When my alarm went off in the morning, Crazy Train was playing....I knew then he had told me the truth. The DJ anounced Randy's passing after the song finished. I felt like crap.
The concert went on a couple months later with Brad Gillis handling the guitar duty. It was a great show, but I never got to see my hero. RIP Randy!!
Great work on the site.

while ace got me started playing guitar, randy made me want to get good. sadly, i didn't discover his playing until 1983 when i picked up a friend's copy of metal health. i noticed that it said "dedicated to the memory of randy rhoads" or something to that extent. so i asked my fried kurt who randy rhoads was. he grabbed diary of a madman, slapped it on the turntable, and i heard over the mountain for the first time.
i was amazed to hear anyone play like that, and still am.
I'm right there with you Sully. 'Diary....' was my induction into Rock & Roll and Randy Rhoads and nothing has come close since. Randy was and always will be to me, the best and most fluid melodic guitarist that graced the Rock & Roll era.... May we have a moment of silence....
RIP Randy...You will always be remembered..!!
To You..Randy Rhoads.
It's great that everyone has been posting their Randy stories. Here's mine.
I wasn't into Ozzy when Randy died. I didn't even know who Randy was. I do remember my brother saying that a member of Ozzy's band was killed in a plane crash, and it was too bad the old man didn't get knocked off himself (consider my brother a non-fan of the genre...).
Anyway, I later got to like the song "Flying High Again", and when I entered college, I borrowed "Tribute" from a fellow guitar player. At this point I knew who Randy was, but was fairly indifferent about him, as I had not heard much of his work. I listened to Tribute, and was floored by his playing. Ever since that evening, I have been a huge fan.
I own an RR5 and an RR1T in honor of Randy, when I designed the guitar generator for this site, the Rhoads was my test bed and the first body shape completed, and his name is spoken with reverence in my house.
Rest in Peace Randy, and thanks for sharing your gift.

Good Lord! The rod up that man's butt must have a rod up its butt!
Well, I guess I'm the odd man out cause Randy didn't influence me one bit, and I didn't buy and/or learn any Ozzy songs. Frankly, I didn't much care for the songs. I guess I'm a little older than most of you and my influences and style were well set before Randy came along.
But I do know amazing talent when I hear it and wish Randy could have moved on to what he wanted to do next...
