I saw them on the 'Black Pirates' tour in '96.

He played his black King V Doubleneck (the first one made, BEFORE Mustaine copied him) that he used on the 'Gullible Idiots' video.

First guy I ever saw with a WALL of Bogners onstage!

Ehh...just find a Korina KV1 and have the headstock redone to throw the sig. on there...

Just to clear the air on differences between the JS-1 and the Mustaine.
.
"The Js-1 neck setback angle was built at a 8.5% greater degree than a standard Kv-1.The fretboard on this instrument is nearly flat with handrolled edges. The electronics were hand wired using 24 gauge solid copper core goldplated cloth insulated wire. The electronic cavity was fully shielded and sealed to resist humidity. All three control pots were steel baseplated along with the bridge humbucker to allow more bottom end punch. Both humbucking pickups were handwound custom for this instrument."

Real nice! Sounds like he was a real nut for over kill on the electronics. How does it sound?

Jeff Smeltz was supposed to be the original replacement for Randy Rhoads after Randy's tragic death in '82.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, that is so cool to learn. I knew Jeff was a student of both classical and jazz. He would have been the perfect replacement for RR.

The first time I ever laid my eyes on the JS-1, it was during the Christmas holiday season. A local hotshot guitarist, it was either Danny Johnson or Mark Griffith, was sponsoring a blues gig at a local tavern. From what I remember, Smeltz was in between cities and had decided to stop over in Shreveport. After inquiring about the local scene, he decided to attend the blues jam. He called his tech and told him he was gigging and to bring JS-1.

As we sat at the table downing Lonestar Longnecks, the local musicians were setting up their Fender tweeds and tuning their Telecasters and Strats. Smeltz waltzes in with this huge case and proceeds to pull out JS-1. I'll never forget when the bassist leaned over and said "hey dude, nice jazz box!"

This guitar truely has endless sustain but with an unusual amout of low end punch that is extremely tight. It has breakup to die for and with sustain like a sustainer system but more open and natural sounding. It was a very good feeling when I carefully opened the back and saw that it is completely original . But I kinda already knew that after the first time I plugged it in.

Oh man, he looked stupid as **** playing a V, but the tone from the special wound pickups in conjunction with the Fender Tweed, produced a tone similar to a well worn in Gretsch Country Gentleman. He smoked through two memorable classics, Blind Lemon's "My Baby Left Me for the Trash Man" and a Ledbetter classic "My Feets Are Hurting."

Refresh my memory on the JS-1 & 2 electronics cavity. Didn't one or both have a built in humidity device which helped preserve the integrity of the electrical system?

Word has it he'll be opening for Clapton in December. I would love to see him do a song with old 'Slowhand'!

I still can't quite believe he switched and he's playing those signature model Silvertones now! A cross between a King V & a Les Paul. Anybody else check them out? The shape is kinda growing on me!

Oh well...I guess if Silvertones are good enough for Paul Stanley then....

Nah dude that's Paul's sig model (duh!).

Jeff's is WAYYY different...they are not offered to the general public. He's got them exclusively....for now.

I always thought the ill fated NAGS (New Age Gargantuan Sluts) project was a mistake....as was the tour with Nashville Pussy.

I mean come on....just because they have similar funny names doesn't mean they are even close musically.

Jeff was way out of his element there and even Steven Adler & CC Deville, as bad as they needed the exposure at the time, don't even mention this project in their list of credits!

Jeff reminds me of another Jeff...Beck. A mad scientist type player who just can't seem to find the mainstream vibe.

I agree Jeff does have a certain extreme genius to His playing and hasnt
made it mainstream as Good as He is/was. After the accident His style seemed to change a little, kinda to the jazz/blues fusion side of things. It almost reminds Me of JB's wired album,
As far as the NAGS/Nashville Pussy colaberation I'll never uderstand that. I've seen Nashville Pussy a few differant times and they really stink.

Since you're deadset against letting it go, would you do me a favor and post a cool pic of the headstock. The inlay, especially on the name, gives me goosebumps. One other thing, when I owned the guitar, there was a picture of Jeff in the case compartment. He had that whole "Jim Gilette" look going on. If you find that, try to scan it for the interested viewers. Thanks man!

I played a Bogner that was owned by Jeff. It was one of the best sounding amps I have ever heard. It was an XTC that had some different mods to it. I wish I would have purchased that one...
