Hey Tim, I'm a little confused. The JS-2 I owned and the one now owned by John, had a very unique nut. It was made from mastadon bone which allowed the guitar to really ring out acoustically. Smeltz also experimented with nuts carved from petrified wood and if I'm not mistaken, there was a replacement nut located in the case compartment (Was it there John?).
The reason I ask is that the picture of JS-1 seems to have a darker nut, possibly graphite. Could it be that the nut we see is dark marble or granite, which Smeltz also had a tendency to lean towards? Thanks in advance!

Good question! The current nut appears to be a black granite or corian.I had read on Jeff's last site that He was steering away from mastadon and/or elephant nuts in general. So maybe this JS-1 was made after Jeff's transition to stone nuts. Interesting to say the least. Ya know Hellraiser6502 might know the answer to that as He is Pretty darn versed on nuts in general.

Steering away from elephant nuts seems entirely reasonable to me..

Hellraiser sent me an email and he seems to think it may be black onyx or black crystal from the Andes. Who would have guessed?
Dammit, I thought the Smeltz was back, then realised this thread is old as the hills.
