Re: evh guitars way overpriced

Sully, please don't misunderstand me. I respect everyone here on this forum. My question to you is this: If the headstock is different on the Strat head Charvels, then why would it need to have a liscensing decal on the back of the guitar?

"But these are build by a CNC machine for maximum production and distribution."

Pardon me, but name me a company that doesn't use CNC routers. Matter of fact, one of the high dollar boutique guitar manufacturers just got busted on this issue, claiming his guitars were totally handmade. Maybe a better term would be "hand assembled."

Do you have an understanding of what handmade means? .. Your either going to use a pin router or a CNC machine to cut the wood. Everythnig else IS done by hand just as it always has been.

Your also stuck on labelling those necks Fender necks.. and no one is going to convince you otherwise.. Tekky,Sandman and Myself have all walked through the factory and have seen how these are made and where they are made. Every one of us would agree .. charvel necks made by charvel/jackson employees in C/J cells ..inside FMIC.. Do I think guitars in general have gotten expensive? Sure I do ..But being from a manufacturing postition I also understand what it costs to produce something.. That's something Sully can explain to you as we have discussed making guitar parts ..

I think they are expensive but in relative terms of what they cost 20/25 yrs ago ..they really aren't that bad ..
Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

Re: evh guitars way overpriced? No.

It's simple. If you think it's worth it, buy it. If not, don't. Fretting and complaining about how other people spend their money is a waste of time and energy.

Shapes are rough cut as well as necks ..all fiished work is done by hand. Frets,Electronics,Paint,Sanding,Buffing etc etc .. still means hand made.. CNC's do not spit out a finished product and blanks still need to be cut for the CNCs

Re: evh guitars way overpriced

Look, I've been working with wood since I was 15 years old (I'm 35 now), and I've just started dabbling in solid body guitar making. I do know what handmade means. I know that a CNC machine doesn't spit out a finished product, but just because you sand it, and paint it, doesn't mean it's handmade. Pressing or hammering frets in the neck doesn't mean it's handmade. When a CNC macine carves the top of the guitar, it's not handmade. These days, nothing mass produced is handmade. I may be set in my ways, but when ALL guitar makers that mass produce throw away their machines, and give out chisels and hammers and saws to their employees, then I'll consider them handmade, otherwise, it's a machine doing most of the work.

"Remember, Charvel doesn't have to pay a liscensing fee to Fender for the use of the Strat headstock."

Yes, JCMI and Charvel DO pay a licensing fee for the use of FMIC's trademarks.

You're right. We put big logs of wood onto a conveyor belt, and they come out the other end as a finished guitar.

And just to clear this up, basswood is being used per Edward's request.

Hmmm, interesting. So it seems that hand-made begins with the bare hands and a tree. Chainsaws or any the other "powered amenities" null and void the hand-made claim... Good to know...

One question though... If one uses teeth to gnaw down the tree, does that still null and void the hand-made claim and render them, "tooth and hand made"?

Funny you mentioned Morgan. When I talked to him at NAMM he seemed amused by how rabid we are about these guitars. I'm thinking he may have laughed himself into a coma at this point...

Re: evh guitars way overpriced

I guess i'm just a glorified machine operator by your standards of measure then. I do this for a LIVING. I work with metal instead of wood. And there is not one person within my trade that would not consider a guitar made under those circumstances hand made.

Sanding,Painting,Buffing,Fret work,Electronic,Assembly,Gluing of wood etc ..IS handmade.

It's not a machine doing most of the work ..the machine is doing a small fraction of what goes into building a guitar.
CNC's probably account for 10-20% of the entire process

We have the same issue as Morgan pointed out with people who don't understand here.. they assume we throw a piece of metal in a machine and a finished part comes out ...This is so far from the truth it isn't funny.. and by those standards I should be making minimum wage ...

Re: evh guitars way overpriced

Not amused, it's just totally different than what I am used to reading from Fender enthusiasts. Like I've always said, I've never been a fan of Jackson and Charvel guitars. They are extrememly well made and beautiful guitars, but I'm a Dead Head (insert your own joke here) and they just aren't my style.

What I find "funny" are the things that get you guys going ... the little details that actually have nothing to do with the playability of a certain guitar. I know that I take it for granted that I work around these guitars every day, but I'm the type of player who plays because I enjoy it. I'm not a great player by any means, but I've never personally been one to get "hung up" on order numbers or whether or not a guitar has a certain headstock.

The point I was trying to make was that, although these kinds of details are not "my thing", I love reading that they are a big deal to many of you. Each guitar and each guitarist is different, and I love the new perspective provided by all of you at the JCF.

CLICHE ALERT!!

I don't laugh at you, I laugh with you.
