Re: Originality......

In the last 20 years, I'd have to say the coolest original body style would have to be the Warrior.

Based off the Jackson headstock, which was proven, and not some other body shape, it's great sitting down, and standing.

And it's pointy.

Re: Originality......

Also a little off topic... Jim Marshall came up with the design for the now world famous "Slant 4x12 Cab" after putting an early Marshall head on top of a straight 4x12 cabinet. He thought it looked stupid with a small amp on top of a large rectangular cab, so he angled the upper portion of the top 4x12 cabinet to make it look better.

It's interesting how alot of the most famous inventions came to be.

Re: Originality......

We have Pete Townshend to thank for the Marshall stack. He wanted an 8x12 cabinet, so Marshall built him a couple. They found out rather quickly that it was just way too fucking heavy...

so they cut it in half.

Hey hey. I have to disagree about Vai. He did not invent the 7 string. George Lynch had a 7 string before him. It had a high A though. George Van Epps or Herb Ellis had them in the 60's. I will say he pioneered it for rock/ fusion.

Agreed about the Les Paul issue - he did not design the Les Paul model, he cut an Epiphone hollowbody in half and mounted them on a railroad tie.
The Les Paul model designed by McCarty was the first solidbody electric guitar (remember, The Log was two hollowbody wings with a solid center - semi-hollow).

Vai designed the current Ibanez RG line when he took his hacked up Green Meanie Charvel to a small company named JEM, which were later bought up by Ibenhad.

OK guy's...This may not be too popular, but when it comes to "originality" nobody can match the founding members of KISS. Let me just say when it comes to God given talent (playing ability) well, they are lacking a bit. But, Gene & Paul both have designed some cool axes....not to mention all the cool stage & costume stuff.

IMHO Paul's PS10 Iceman is the coolest guitar shape ever built, and It was a quality instrament. Then he took it up a knotch with the cracked mirror top (which the Jackson CS is now doing). Even though his later attempts were lame (Washburn & now Silvertone).

And then there are Gene's AXE bass & his "punisher" bass. Both really cool.

The sad part is they are sellouts for the all mighty dollar. Back when they were "real", they had some really cool ideas. Now it's all about money......

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Paul Stanley didn't design the Iceman. It was around for a couple of years before he played Ibanez. Simmons and Stanley both have ALWAYS been sellouts, and have never pretended they weren't.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">MMMKay, Well he didn’t design the Iceman shape. But he did design the PS10 Paul Stanley signature Iceman. The shape was the only thing retained by Ibanez. Everything else was Paul's design, or specs.(excluding the bridge)...Too bad he can't play worth a crap. I've owned several PS10's....The originals, and the LTD run are nice guitars.

The cracked mirror top was his idea.....Did he steal it from someone else??? Don't know....don't care. The thread said "originality"....they have it, they exploit it, and it made them rich. So, if that's the "goal", they did it in an original way.

How 'bout EVH coming out of the blocks with:

1. Original "hot rod" Strat, w/humbucker & locking trem
2. Variac-equipped Marshall
3. Quantum leap in rock technique & tone

(The D-Tuna was cool too, though produced much later)

Lets clear up a couple of points:

Grover Jackson designed the pointy headstock, Not RR. Grover used this new headstock on the 'Jackson' guitar, so as not to confuse it with Charvel i.e. his bread and butter of the day.

Actual timeline in regards to the first solid body electric guitar:
1. Les Paul built the log and brought it to Gibson and they laughed him out of the place.
2. Fender introduces the Broadcaster, an electric 'spanish' guitar
3. Gibson realizing they f'd up and says get that guy with is weird 'log' guitar back in here, Pronto!!
4. Here comes the Les Paul...Yeah!!!
