hi all
i told you lately that i got an old custom shop bass for unbelievable 220 usd [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
it arrived these days and i was really amazed what i saw
the seller told me the s# was 1583 so i thought it must have been a ontario one with a leftover SD plate
BUT: [img]/images/graemlins/what.gif[/img]
it has SD routes
and the neck reads:
9771 OBD
and the neckpocket reads:
9771 B.S. 1-9-86
P Act
MD
i learned that ontario production begun with s#1506
i learned that jackson bolt on production begun in april 86
rob writes at jacksonmuseum that wo# in 86 go from around 7000 till 9999 and start then over again with 0000
what do you say about this nice piece of wood wich sounds and feels incredible [img]/images/graemlins/notworthy.gif[/img]
i think we have to correct history a bit [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]
btw january 9th is my birthday [img]/images/graemlins/toast.gif[/img]

i hear ya! i've got 1991 and it has the sd route and sd plate. best playing/sounding bass out of 20 i have.i paid 235 for mine a few years ago and mine has a kahler trem too.

what i wanted to say is:
look at the date in the neckpocket
look at the s#
look at the SD routes
and tell me who is wrong [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]
is the s# chart wrong?
is it wrong that jackson bolt ons started in april 86?
or is it just that we can´t count basses into all these rules?

If it was made before 1990, it's a USA Custom Shop bass period. There were no production model USA Jacksons until 1990, though the Student Series was more or less a "stripped down" set of standard options (rosewood boards with dots, no binding), and those were produced in small quantities as "demo models" for dealers to have in stock so customers could see them in person.

Since this bass is dated 1986, it's a Custom Shop bass. Yes you could order a bolt-on back then, but the majority of the USA Jackson Student models were neckthrough. Remember, this was still when Fender and Gibson were the Kings of Rock Guitar, so players wanted minor changes to those original designs, which meant bolt-on basses with rosewood fretboards and dot inlays, but rear-loaded electronics and possibly graphics (nothing screws up a nice Metallic or Sparkly paintjob like a dumbass hunk o plastic taking up 85% of the surface of the body [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] )

i should have used "manufacturing" instead of "production" to avoid missunderstandings [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

the thing is
i thought this piece showed us that :
jackson bolt ons didn´t start in april ´86 but allready before
and
that s# 1506 could NOT be the first one in ontario made
UNLESS this bass was routed in SD, parts shipped to Ontario and assembled there
and if it really should be assembled in Ontario, it shows that they switched manufacuring from SD to Ontario earlier than late 86(refering to the date in the neck pocket)
this is too confusing for me
someone help me out please

The score that brought me to the JCF was a 1985 Neckthrough Concert Bass serial J0969 all black with piezo pickup only. The bass, gas, lunch at a pub with a couple of beers was just about $100.

I don't know what to think on this one. I had a bolt on last year that was physically dated September 1986, it had SG 36 tuners, the small route, small pickup ring, it was clean as a whistle and I bought it from a music store that had it for a few years and was never able to sell it. I paid dirt cheap money for it. The serial number was 2444. It was called a parts mutt around here as the number was too late for those specs. I still believe it was stock. I was the first person to ever pop that neck off. However, I can't explain why it had that number, it just did.

That's your problem right there. There were certainly Jackson bolt-ons made prior to 1986. They're not that rare.

Don't confuse current manufacturing with what they did then. Every peice was a "Custom Shop" one-off. There were no "Production" guitars being cranked out. So the specs were whatever someone or some store wanted and orderd.

I have a dimas custom S/N 12XX (guitar, not bass) with body dated 1/86. Haven't been able to verify w/ Jackson whether the plate matches though. Work order on this one is in the 5000's. Very strange to see a jan '86 with work order in the 9000's... I thought 9000's were from much later '86. Perhaps yours was just a leftover body. I've seen many ontario built guitars with the dimas route, probably due to leftover parts.

The small route pops up here and there through the rest of the 80's. I bet it was something you could ask for.

my bass has a march 87 date penciled in the neck and heel pocket but the custom shop gave me a march 86 build date so i was hoping mine was really sd too! my bass has an ebony board.

i forgot to add, there's a name written in ink in the pocket and neck and the guy contacted me after i posted about it in the jcf. he had indeed ordered from the custom shop. joe, if you're out there i'd like to hear from you again

Then again, you could also request a specific serial number (lucky numbers, birthday, etc etc). Maybe the guy's got married on 1-5-83? Or had his first kid? Anyway, Jackson COULD do bolt ons that early (ever see a Charvel?), they just didn't do them as standard. Plus, as you've seen on the JCF, if someone says they're getting a Custom Shop, someone always insists they go with neckthrough [img]/images/graemlins/brow.gif[/img] even though bolt-on is a lot cheaper and just as good, so maybe the guy who ordered it wanted a bolt on.
There are no hard and fast rules regarding the early stuff - they built whatever you wanted. You might find a Fender P-Bass one day with a Jackson or Charvel neckplate.
